Application for MTEP Student Teaching
Spring 2018
Student teaching is part of a professional semester during the spring semester of the senior year. During student teaching the student spends the majority of the semester in a full-time teaching assignment. All students provide their own transportation during student teaching. Student teaching must be conducted through DePauw University, with placement approved by the Director of Music Teacher Education and supervision carried out by DPU music education faculty members. Student teaching placement must be within a 75-mile radius of the DePauw campus.
REQUIREMENTS
Applications for student teaching should be submitted to the Director of Music Teacher Education a full year in advance of the semester during which the student plans to student teach. No student is permitted to enroll in student teaching without first being admitted to the Music Teacher Education Program. Students should prepare application materials with great care. Public school professionals (e.g., superintendents, principals, and cooperating teachers) read these materials; therefore, approval for placement is largely determined by the quality of the application materials.
Enrollment in student teaching is subject to the approval of the Director of Music Teacher Education and the Unit Assessment System Review Committee. No student may enroll in student teaching without a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA. The student must have received a grade of C or better in all professional education courses completed. The expected enrollment for the student teaching semester is for three full course credits — two course credits for the student teaching experience and one course credit for senior seminar. No other courses (including applied music lessons) should be scheduled during the student teaching semester.
Student teaching placements are to be in approved schools with qualified cooperating teachers who are full-time music educators and who have at least ten years of teaching experience, five of which at their current teaching level (high school, middle school, or elementary school), and three of which are in the current building. Cooperating teachers should be educators with whom student teaching candidates have not previously worked (music teacher during student’s P-12 education, field experience, summer teaching or coaching, Extended Studies internship, etc.). Future music educators will benefit from experiencing a variety and breadth of opportunities to work with current professional music teachers.
Student teachers will be paired with one cooperating teacher for the full 14-week student teaching placement. The geographical area of placement is determined by subject area taught and individual needs in conjunction with, and the approval of, the Director of Music Teacher Education. MTEP student teacher applicants MUST visit and observe at least their 1st and 2nd choices for cooperating teachers before obtaining their music education advisor’s signature on their Student Teaching Preference Form.
Student teaching is a full-time commitment and critical to future career development. Students must adhere to the school calendars where they are placed for student teaching and should not take on campus responsibilities that could interfere with their effectiveness. Possible travel/touring with School of Music performing ensembles during the student teaching semester must be addressed in advance with the Director of Music Teacher Education, not with the prospective cooperating teacher.

Please print the form on the last page of this packet, sign it, and TAKE IT TO THE REGISTRAR’S OFFICE. Your physical signature is required in order for an official transcript to be sent, at no charge to you, to the School of Music office. Return your completed preference form and your completed personal data record via email to Dr. Jetton.
Give careful consideration to each portion of this form. Pay special attention to grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Attach a photo to the first page of your placement packet, choosing a photo that is as professional as possible. Remember that school corporation officials (Director of Human Resources, Superintendent, Building Principal, Cooperating Teacher) will review these materials as will your university supervisor and the Director of Music Teacher Education.
Along with the placement preference information, you must submit your InTASC Portfolio (Checkpoint 2) as part of the student teaching application process. Directions for completing the Personal Data Record
1. There is no specific number of entries that must be recorded in each section of the placement packet. Use your best judgment. The essay statements can take multiple pages.
2. If you do not have relevant information to record in one or more of the sections, you should record “Not Applicable.” Do not delete any part of this document.
3. Forced Page codes have been placed at the end of certain pages in this document, which will create a page break whether the page is full of text or not. This occurs after the title and personal information page, and before the essay pages. Do not remove these codes. The remaining pages can be expanded or contracted in order for you to present your personal information in a manner that is visually attractive. Do not separate information from the section heading that describes it when going to a new page.
4. Proofread carefully. Run spelling and grammar checks. Ask a second person to proofread your document.
5. Insert a professional picture of yourself where noted on the title page.
