Old St Luke’s Church ~Benns Church Blvd~ Cemetery
Transcribed by members of the
Grave Site Survey Task Force (GSSTF)
Under the Auspices of
Isle of Wight County Historical Society (IWCHS)
Visited Intermittently from 2004 - 2005
Revised July 12, 2006
In order to provide some semblance of tombstone locations in the somewhat sprawling cemetery, a sketch of the cemetery was annotated with the somewhat arbitrary layout sections to provide continuity in the transcribing process … these sections are identified in the attached sketch.
Historic St. Luke's Church, c. 1632, affectionately known as "the Old Brick", is the "Oldest surviving church of English foundation in America" and the only original Gothic church in the USA. Originally an Anglican church, after the Revolutionary War it was consecrated Episcopal. British Soldiers and Confederates camped under our great oaks. Historic St. Luke's Church is a non-profit foundation; Historic St. Luke's Restoration, Inc. St. Luke's is a National Historic Landmark and Historic Shrine.
Any text within the “[ ]” is a comment about the tombstone inscription, ex., [fs] indicates a footstone inscription. Throughout the transcribing process, an attempt was made to preserve the, ‘look and feel’ of the original inscriptions as regards word spacing, arrangement, and possible misspellings.

That I no more thy graceful form shall see;
And must I tread life’s weary path alone?
