Overview:
This course provides advanced concentrated study upon the development of expressive and creative drawing and painting. A variety of media and techniques will be experienced to develop a sound background in design and composition. P&D 1, 2, 3 students will pursue sustained, in-depth exploration of specific media and techniques through independent, contracted studies.
Goals:
1. To further develop self-expression and creative growth applying subjects, symbols and ideas in individual artwork.
2. To analyze common characteristics of the visual arts evident across time and culture, to formulate interpretations of meaning.
3. To permit intensive application to the development of individual skills.
4. To learn to work in an independent, self-motivated direction solving challenging problems using the skills of analysis, synthesis, and evaluation.
5. To review and re-emphasize the basic fundamentals of drawing and painting
6. To further develop powers of observation and perception.
Projects:
Our art practice will be in many of the following areas:
- Drawing: contour, perspective, value, texture, proportion, figure drawing, portraiture
- Painting: color theory, contrast, watercolor, acrylics, oils, canvas making
- Pastels, watercolor, landscape, sill life
- Design: composition, layout, positive/negative space, pattern, printmaking,
Grading Policy:
Your total quarter grade is determined according to the following weighted categories. Assignments turned in late will result in a drop in percentage.
- Projects
The projects in this class will take several days or even weeks to complete. They are graded according to a rubric, which considers craftsmanship, effort, application of taught skills, self-expression, following directions, application of art elements and principles, effective use of time, and self evaluation. This area makes up the majority of your grade. Each assignment MUST be turned in to pass this class.
Writing is an important aspect of any art practice. You need to be able to express your thoughts about your own and others work. Written assignments will include critical method essays, journals, self-evaluations, artist write-ups, and worksheets. Be prepared to write about every project you complete. Keep all papers.
- Class Folder / Sketchbook
You will be given a sketchbook to work in. Keep your folder/sketchbook in class and stored on your classroom shelf. You will use your sketchbook for ALL project planning. Also, you will complete a variety of assignments, including drawing, brainstorming, and idea generating. On occasion I would like to have you complete creative journal pages with a theme that I will assign.
- Participation / Clean-up/ Supplies
You will receive a citizenship/work habits evaluation, which will be based on your attendance, class conduct and your contribution to class discussions. Critique is an important part of this class, and everyone must offer constructive comments and suggestions. YOU HAVE TO BE PRESENT TO PARTICIPATE!
· Art can be messy work, so keep our supplies nice and our environment clean. Students MUST help clean up after themselves. Everyone is responsible for cleaning his or her own area. In addition, students will be assigned rotating clean-up duty as well as end of the semester clean-up duty
- Formal Assessment- Tests & Quizzes
YES, we do have tests in art. You will be given a comprehensive test at the end of each quarter. They are primarily vocabulary and technique tests, and can be in many formats, including short answers, oral, multiple choice, DVD or essays.

Make-Up Policy:
If you have a concern about a due date, you need to see me IN ADVANCE. If you are absent, it is YOUR responsibility to find out what you missed and to make up the work. If you are absent on a test or quiz day, you will need to make it up the day you return. If you are truant, you will not be permitted to make up missed work.
Fees and Supplies:
Donations of household items are always helpful and appreciated, including Clorox cleaning wipes, paper towels, Kleenex, sponges, liquid soap, plastic bags, rags, etc.
We have a Lab Fee of $20.00. It will go toward your art materials. You will also be given a list of recommended supplies for this class (Lab Fee and Supplies due by 9/8). All students will have access to basic classroom supplies.
Tools:
Several tools have been numbered for inventory. You will be assigned a number for tool check out. Some tools will require an exchange of school ID for check out, so you should have your ID with you everyday.
Classroom Behavior:
Although we have fun in this class, it is not a “goof off” class, nor is it a study hall for other class work. If you have downtime, you will work in your sketchbook. There is always something to do in this class. This is a class in which you will earn your Fine Arts requirement for graduation. Be prepared to work everyday, so you can be proficient in Visual Art vocabulary, concepts, and skills. I have very high expectations for behavior and your quality of work. Following are the guidelines that we will follow to make this year a success!
