Science Fair 2015: Important Dates
Each of the following sections will be discussed at length in your science class! Play close attention to any details and take notes if needed! We will be working in class over the next two weeks to prepare for the experiment and get organized for the due dates further on during this semester.
Friday, September 3: Topic Proposal Sheet due! You will spend time in class researching possible topics that may interest you. You will fill out the Topic Proposal Sheet and hand it to Mrs. Crowder to approve one of the three topics you are interested in.
Note: Projects with living objects (animals, plants, humans, etc…) are NOT encouraged. Earth/Space, Physical science, and engineering ideas are strongly recommended. Brand comparison projects, such as which type of battery lasts longest, which brand of diaper absorbs the most water, etc. are strongly discouraged.
Friday, September 11: Science Fair Project Research Plan is due! You will be turning in a typed research plan on this day. You will have class time to complete this. See the back of the Student Checklist (1A) for the Research Plan/Project Summary Instructions (attached) and the guidelines and example included in this packet!!!
September 21 – November 6: Carry out your experiment!! Be sure to collect your data in an organized fashion and keep all data in your Project Data Book!
Project Data Book: Use a composition book, spiral notebook, or even a folder with lined paper in it as your data book. The data book is a place for you to jot down ideas, record data, make tables and diagrams, keep a record of how things are going, list challenges you have, list new questions that come up, etc. The data book will be placed in front of your project at the fair, and many judges like to look through it to see how you approached your research question, how you decided to collect data, problems you encountered, and how you problem solved.
Friday, November 6 - Data/ResultsDue. This will include the data collected in your experiment(this should be in the form of a graph!), a description of your findings, the results of your investigation, and a typed conclusion.
Friday, November 6 – Final Science Fair Report Due (along with your Data/Results)! See the details for this report included in this packet.
November 9 – November 20: Work on Display Board!
DisplayBoard: Tri-Fold, 36 inches x 48 inches (Recommended).Your research plan, final data, results, and conclusion in a report cover along with your display board and project data book is due in class the morning of Friday, November 20th!
ISEF Guidelines: Maximum Size of Project
Depth (front to back): 30 inches or 76 centimeters
Width (side to side): 48 inches or 122 centimeters
Height (floor to top): 108 inches or 274 centimeters
Monday, November 30 – Set-up in Media Center. Students who will be moving on to the SCMS Science Fair will be setting up in the Media Center during their science class period. Follow the directions given to you by your science teacher and Mr. Rodriguez in the Media Center on this day.
Tuesday, December 1: Science Fair! Each student will report to the media center at an assigned time. You will be given your assigned time when you set up your project on November 30. You will spend approximately one hour in the media center discussing your project and being interviewed by science fair judges.
