Clare’s Corner

Tena koutou

As I prepare this newsletter I am getting ready to head away with the Year 8’s on their camp that they have organised. I hope that I have remembered everything they had on the gear list!!

These students have researched and planned the whole trip to fit within their budget.

I congratulate them on their effort and organisational skills.

This photo shows them at the top of Mata Peak in Napier.

We now have a South End School app (see advert at bottom of newsletter) – this will allow

us to be able to share messages/reminders instantly to you. It will allow you to let us know

very easily if your child is away. We do encourage you to download it (it’s FREE) and sign up.

Yotam Kay from Pakaraka Permaculture is coming in for the day on Friday to work with our Enviro Group, Earth School and any students who are keen to help. We hope it will be a fine day so they can do some planned outside activities as well as indoor ones:

  • Building an outdoor classroom in the food forest from willow poles, bark chips and native grasses with Tom, Johni and Julie.
  • Planting out in the food forest with Yotam and Julie – they have lavender, rosemary, oregano and Manuka to plant.
  • Weaving harakeke rope for tethering the willow poles together.
  • Working on a renewable energy report – researching renewable energy sources and ways to utilise them such as solar power.
  • Making a solar oven – use the instructions and materials provided in the solar oven challenge box.

Feel free to come and have a look, join in, or observe. A great day ahead.

Summer Sport – What sports do your children like to play? Do you know how to sign them up for the upcoming season? If you need help PLEASE email me so I can get the information for you. I will do my best to cater for all towns and clubs.

Board of Trustees News – It is with pleasure that we share with the school community the two teaching appointments we have made this week for our school.

Caragh Briggs for the Junior Montessori. It is wonderful that Caragh can remain with us.

Rebekah Mehrtens for the Junior Mainstream class. Rebekah spent some time here at South End during term 1 & 2 this year. She will take up the new role at the beginning of 2018 so Ann-Marie Boyd will remain with us until the end of the year.

General:

Welcome to Olivia Alexander-Hodson, who has joined Room 2, and her family to our school community.

Maths Holiday Programme – In the upcoming October holidays another Maths Is Fun programme called “Take A Chance” is being offered free of charge by the Eastern & Central Community Trust and co-ordinated by Wairarapa REAP. The programme is for children from Years 1-8 and engages them in mathematical activities which are oral, active and fun. All children receive a take home pack of games and activities to do at home. The programme will run from 2-5th Oct at Greytown Library or

9-12th Oct at Carterton Library

To register your child please contact 06 3049061 (Greytown Lib) or 379 4080 (Carterton Lib).

Tuckabox– Tuckabox provides real food, which is cost effective and healthy, for your child’s lunchbox. It is delivered to school by morning tea time, labelled and sorted into chilly bags for each class.

On ordering, the parent receives a confirmation email and then on the day of the first delivery of that order, a completed email is sent. They send out a reminder text during the week, in advance, to the families who have previously ordered. Ordering is easy and simple but must be done by 9pm on a Sunday night. If you look on their website hppt://tuckabox.co.nz/order/ you will see that each day has a different menu and the menu will be emailed out each week with our newsletter. Deliveries are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

South End School will be introducing this service next term for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays.

Onesie Day – Room 2 organised a onesie day last week to help raise funds for their end

of term activities. Thank you to everyone who supported them. They raised $102.20.

Football Holiday Programme

The Paul Ifill Football Academy will be running a holiday programme from 9am – 12pm

on Mon 2nd – Wed 4th October and Mon 9th – Wed 11th October at the Trust House

Memoral Park Turf in Masterton. The cost is $45 per day or $120 for 3 days. To

register, please go to or phone 370 1300.

Cash for Communities – PGG Wrightson and Balance Agri-Nutrients will again be running their Cash for Communities scheme to help raise funds for local schools. They will donate $1 for every tonne of qualifying Balance fertiliser purchased by farmers between 1st Sept and 30th Nov, who have registered and nominated a school. So please, if you are purchasing bulk fertiliser, we would be most grateful if you were to nominate South End School. Many thanks.

Springtime Allergies – While most of us look forward to the start of Spring, it can be a tough time for kids with hayfever, asthma and other seasonal allergies and illnesses. Here are some tips for keeping kids well and enjoying the best of Spring:

  • Get advice, talk to your local medical centre or local pharmacist about treatments.
  • Stay active – being active helps develop young lungs and helps children cope with asthma or other respiratory illnesses.
  • Avoid pollen by closing bedroom windows at night and check your garden for allergenic plants.
  • Clear the dust from your home.
  • Regular washing and drying of hands keeps them free from pollens etc.
  • Keep hydrated by drinking lots of water which keeps germs away from dry throats and noses.
  • Make sure you have a handy supply of inhalers, antihistamines and other medication.

END OF TERM CELEBRATION – WEDNESDAY 27TH SEPTEMBER
