TIPS ON GIVING AN EFFECTIVE BUSINESS ORAL PRESENTATION

Preparing for the Presentation

·  Know your audience – tailor your tone and word choice to who you will be presenting to

·  Have a short introduction that grabs the audience’s attention and describes the purpose of your presentation

·  Proofread any documents or visuals you create before the day of the presentation

·  Practice, practice, practice – not only with yourself, but also with your team as a whole

·  Anticipate questions that may be asked from the audience

·  Conclude on a "high note" - include an overall summary and proposed actions or options

·  Find some way to go “above and beyond” in your presentation. Make your group stand-out

Before the Presentation

·  Dress professionally – they way you look does have an effect on your message

·  When you walk into the room display a level of confidence, make eye contact, and introduce yourselves

·  It’s ok to make small-talk while you are doing any set-up and getting any technology needs ready

Giving the Presentation

·  Look at the audience – don’t talk to the screen or just read from your presentation

·  Incorporate visual aids and handouts effectively

·  Include the use of transitions in your presentation. Allow one part of your presentation to flow into the next.

·  Convey "controlled enthusiasm" for your subject - the audience will forgive a lot if the speaker is enthusiastic.

·  Pay attention to your posture – stand up straight, don't lean.

·  Your audience will mirror your attitude - radiate confidence without preaching

·  Develop an easy style – open and relaxed.

·  Don't confuse enthusiasm with loudness. No one wants to be yelled at.

After the Presentation

·  Thank the audience

·  Leave the room with confidence

·  Make sure you are out of the room before commenting to each other about the presentation
