Summary

Summary of the paper must be written here using Times New Roman font of 8.5 point, with appropriate indent specified in this template, the width of printed area set equal to 16 cm. The spacing between lines is set equal to 10 point (=3.5 mm), which must be observed. In the summary, the background of the study should not be written at some length, but instead the essence of the paper, that is, what are new and important in the adopted technique and obtained results, should be written in a clear way. When writing the paper, you may overwrite this template but please follow the size of font and spacing and also the appearance in the style as close as possible. Please note that the template for English version is different from that for Japanese version.

  1. Introduction

In this template, we describe and provide the formatting guidelines for submission as the JASNAOE journal paper to be written in English. Simply download this template from the web, and insert your information where applicable. These guidelines and template streamline the process of peer review and production, promote uniformity of appearance. By conforming to the specs of this template, your paper will reflect the look of this document. The left and right margins, center gutter, and print area are automatically set to desired length, and thus these should not be changed.

The body of the paper begins with the Introduction. In the Introduction, state the purpose of the paper, or author’s aim, so that the reader will have a clear concept of the objective(s). As shown above, the title of chapter must be centered, with serial number followed by dot (.) and the title with bold-face in 10 point of Times New Roman. The first letter of words in the chapter title must be in upper case (capital letter). Please insert one line spacing before and after the chapter title. The font size for the body of text must be 9 point and the separation distance between adjacent lines is set equal to 12 point (equal to 4.2 mm, because approximately 1 pt = 0.35 mm). Please do not change these settings. Note that the line spacing for a paper in English is different from that for a paper to be written in Japanese.

Following the Introduction, the text should be organized into logical parts or sections that describe the problem, the means of solution, technical data or substantiation and other information necessary to quantify properly the results presented and conclusions drawn. Acknowledgments (if any), References, and Appendices (if any) follow the Conclusions.

  1. Affiliation and Footnote

* University of Nihon Zosen Gakkai

** Research Institute for Marine Technology

*** Marine Technical University of Japan

**** Kansai Shipbuilding Co., Ltd.

Received DD/MM/YYYY15 September 2011

The affiliation(s) of the author(s) must be written as footnote in the left-bottom part, using the asterisk corresponding to the superscript attached to the name of author. If the number of different affiliations is less than 4, the difference can be indicated by the number of asterisk (like *, **, … ). If there are more than 5, use *1, *2, … to distinguish. The date of receipt of the paper will be inserted by a person in charge of publication.

The author names should consist of first name and complete last name, in upper and lower cases, and should be written with 10-point font, together with the membership title in italic. The style of writing is shown above, which must be observed. The affiliation is supposed to be indicated by asterisk in superscript.

  1. Formatting

3. 1 Paper Title

The paper title written with Times New Romans, bold-faced in 16-point font, in upper and lower cases should be centered at the location shown. Subtitle may be used, which should be in 11 point, centered, with normal (not bold-faced) style of Times New Roman.

3. 2 Section and Subsection Titles

The section title must be flush left, starting with serial number (but no dot at the end of section and subsection numbers, as shown above), and should be bold-faced, 9-point font, in upper and lower cases. Article like the or a is not capitalized unless it is the first word of the header.

Subsection heads should also be bold-faced with serial number, in 9-point font, and flush left. Only the first letter of the title should be in upper case as shown next.

3. 2. 1 Spacing above and below titles

One-line spacing should be inserted before starting a new section, but no line spacing is needed after the section head and above and below of subsections as shown above. The easiest way of writing the titles of section and subsection is just to copy examples, paste, and change for your corresponding titles.

3. 3 Text Citation of References

Within text of an article, references should be listed at the end of each paper and numbered in the order cited to in the text. When citing a reference in the text, the reference number should be of superscript with right parenthesis only, like reference1) and this reference number must correspond to that in the list of references at the end.

3. 4 Last Page

The two columns on the last page should be as close to equal length as possible. See the last page of this template.

4. Figures and Tables

4. 1 Figures

When figure(s) will be inserted, as shown below, keep sufficient space above the figure. Number figures consecutively and use figure number when referring to the figure (Fig. 1). Figures must have a caption consisting of an abbreviated number, like Fig. 1, and a brief title should be placed below the figure, centered, in 9-point font.

Fig. 1 Figure title.

For good legibility, lines, letters and symbols must be of sufficient weight (or darkness), size and thickness. Avoid using shades. Black-white or grey figures are preferable.

Fig. 2 This is an example of figure title when it cannot be written in one line.

If the caption is long and extends to plural lines, the caption part (excluding the figure number part) should be flush left, and dot (.) should be put at the end of caption. The line spacing in the caption of figure (and also table) should be 11 pt (3.85 mm) for good appearance. An example is shown in Fig. 2.

4. 2 Tables

It is often advantageous to place information in a tabular format as shown here. Number tables consecutively and use table numbers when referring to table, like Table 1. Note that the caption for tables must be placed above the table. (On the contrary, the caption of figures should be placed below the figure, as shown already.)

Table 1 Table captions should be placed above the table.

Margins / Left Column / Right Column
Top / 27 mm / 27 mm
Left / 16 mm / 107.5 mm
Right / 100 mm / 191.5 mm
Bottom / 275 mm / 275 mm

5. Equations

Equations are to be numbered consecutively from Eq. (1) to the end of the paper. If there are equations in any appendix, please initialize the equation number and put A to the serial number like (A1). The equation number should be written with parentheses, and when writing an equation in a new line, the equation number should be placed flush right with right-hand margin of the column. Equation itself should be centered. An example is shown below.

(1)

The font size for equations must be identical to that for text; that is, 9 point. When including equations with superscript or subscript in text line, the separation distance between lines may change automatically. However, this makes appearance worse as a journal paper, and you can avoid it by fixing the separation distance as specified.

6. Making PDF Files

Since the peer review will be done using an electronic file, it is necessary to convert a Word file into corresponding PDF file which can be read on any computer with Adobe Acrobat Reader.

6. 1 Conversion with Adobe Acrobat

Although Adobe Acrobat (which is different from Acrobat Reader) is not a free software and not attached to MS Word, it is recommended to purchase it and install in your computer. With the proviso that Adobe Acrobat is available, how to make PDF file will be explained below.

Once Adobe Acrobat has been installed, a new menu or tool bar may appear in MS Word for making PDF file from a Word file. Thus the easier way is to use that function in the tool bar. However, there is one thing to be cautious: unless the resolution for figures or pictures is enhanced by changing some settings, the resolution is usually low. There may be two ways for enhancing the resolution. First one is to select ‘File’ – ‘Print’ in the menu of Word and choose ‘Adobe PDF’ for printer in the pull-down menu (Fig. 3). Then click ‘Property’ of the printer and select “High Quality” in the tab of ‘Adobe PDF Setting’ (See Fig. 4). In MS Word-2010, you can find a tab of ‘Acrobat’ if it is installed. After moving to that tab, click ‘Environment Setting’. You may see a window similar to Fig.4.

Fig.3 How to use Adobe PDF (for MS Word with Acrobat).

Fig. 4 Setting for high quality PDF file.

The second method is to change the setting of resolution in Adobe Distiller. Adobe Distiller will be installed together with Adobe Acrobat, and it can be activated by double-clicking the execution file acrodist.exe. (If you cannot find it, please search acrodist.exe file in your computer.) In the menu of ‘Adobe PDF Setting’ in Adobe Distiller, there are options for changing the resolution for graphics among lowest, low, medium, high, and supreme. In fact, the same change of setting can be done by clicking ‘Detailed Setting’ in the window of Fig.4 (or similar window in Word-2010). After changing the resolution, it is advisable to save that setting with certain new name to keep the setting changed and to use again.

7. Conclusions

A brief summary of your research results should be included in this chapter toward the end of the paper. Some readers might read conclusions first, hence you should write in a clear and convincing way what was studied and what are newly found.

Normally there must be a number of items to be mentioned. If this is the case, plural form of Conclusions (not Conclusion) must be used.

Acknowledgment(s)

Acknowledgments (acknowledgements, if you are using British spelling) may be made to those individuals or institutions not mentioned elsewhere in the paper that made an important contribution. Please note that no serial number should be attached to the title of Acknowledgement and References below.

References

References to original sources for cited material is to be listed together at the end of the paper. References should be published materials (excluding computer program manuals) accessible to the public. Internal technical reports may be cited only if they are easily accessible to the public or any reader. Private communications should be acknowledged within the text, not referenced.

References should be listed at the end of each paper and numbered in the order cited in the text, not alphabetically. The reference number must be written with serial number with right parenthesis only and in an itemized style as shown below.

1) Family names and initials of all authors: Title of the paper, abbreviated title of the journal (or conference proceedings), number of the volume, number of the issue, numbers of the first and last pages, and year of publication.

10) Kagemoto, H., and Yue, D.K.P.: Three-Dimensional Bodies in Water Waves: An Exact Algebraic Method, Journal of Fluid Mechanics, Vol. 166, pp. 189–209, 1986.

Appendix

In a highly mathematical paper it is advisable to develop equations and formulas in an appendix. Appendices also may be used for detailed descriptions of apparatus and other related material not essential to general presentation of subject.

The serial number for equations, figures, tables (if any) must be reset and alphabet ‘A’ should be attached, like

(A1)
