Station Map Symbols

STATION SYMBOLS:

Station models are used by meteorologists to illustrate weather conditions at a given time in a given location. Symbols should be placed in the proper location, as indicated in the Reference Tables.

Details on Station Models (refer to your Reference Tables)

Temperature / In °F / Ex. “28” indicates 28°F
Present Weather / Uses symbols, as indicated in the reference table / Ex. · = rain
« = snow
Visibility / How far you can see - Indicated in miles (low for days with fog and/or precipitation) / Ex. ½ = half mile visibility and 3 = 3-mile visibility
Dewpoint / Indicated in °F – temperature at which parcel of air becomes cooled to saturation / Ex. “27” indicates saturation is reached at 27°F
Wind speed / Indicated in knots (1 knot = 1.15 mi/hr); Each half feather indicates 5 knots and each full feather indicates 10 knots / Ex.
2 whole and 1 half = 25 knots
6 whole = 60 knots
Cloud Cover / Indicated as a percentage of cloud cover – from 0% (clear skies) to 100% (fully cloudy) / Ex.
100% 75%
Barometric Pressure / Indicated in millibars (mb)
In order to determine the correct number from the station model, you need to add a 10 in front of the number ( if it below 500) or a 9 in front of the number (if it is above 500)and move the decimal point one place to the left / Ex. 187 = 1018.7 mb
203 = 1020.3 mb
245 = 1024.5 mb
563 = 956.3 mb
1037.8 mb = 378 on model
978.3 mb = 783 on model
Barometric Trend / Indicates rise or fall in pressure over the past 3 hours (+ for rise, and – for fall, / rising steadily and \ falling steadily) / Ex. +23/ = a steady 2.3-mb rise
-14\ = a steady 1.4-mb fall
- = remained steady
Precipitation / Inches in the past 6 hours – indicated as a decimal. / Ex. 1 = 1 inch in 6 hrs
.5 = ½ inch in 6 hours
Wind Direction / “Tail” on the station model points in the direction from which the wind is blowing
/ Ex.
______West
Southeast

IMAGE EXPLANATION:

1. On the weather map station model below the table, use the correct symbols and proper format to indicate the six weather conditions shown in the table.
2. Complete the weather data table (see image) for Albany, New York, based on the station model shown on the map. [2]
3. On the station model provided, place these three weather measurements in their correct location using the proper format. [2]
4. Base your answer on the weather station model provided (see image).
What is the actual air pressure (millibars) shown by this weather station model? [1]
5. Base your answer on the weather station model provided (see image).
a What specific type of precipitation is occurring at this weather station? [1] ______
b State one additional weather condition shown by the station model. [1] ______
6. Base your answer on the weather station model provided (see image).
On the weather station model provided, draw the proper symbols to indicate a wind of 25 knots blowing from the southeast. [1]
7. Using the proper format, place the following data on the weather station model provided. [2]
Dewpoint = 74°F
Cloud cover = 100%
8. The atmospheric conditions at a given location are represented by the weather station model below.
Fill in the correct information for each variable listed, based on this weather station model. [2]
Air pressure: ______ mb Air temperature: ______°F
Cloud cover: ______ % Present weather:______
Amount of precipitation in last six hours: ______ in
Base your answers to 9-10 on the accompanying station model, which shows the weather conditions at Rochester, New York, at 4 p.m. on a particular day in June.
9. What was the actual barometric pressure, according to the station model, to the nearest tenth of a millibar?
10. The winds shown by this station model were blowing from which compass direction and at what wind speed?
11. A student using a sling psychrometer obtained a dry-bulb reading of 20°C and a wet-bulb reading of 16°C for a parcel of air outside the classroom.
a State the dewpoint. ______
b On another day, the student determined the dewpoint was 70°F. Record the dewpoint, using the proper format, in the correct location on the weather station model provided.
12. A weather station records the following data: Air pressure is 1,001.0 millibars.
Wind is from the south.
Wind speed is 25 knots
Using the proper weather map symbols, place this information in the correct locations on the weather station model provided. [3]
13. The weather data shown in the accompanying table was collected at Boonville, New York.
On the station model provided, using the proper format, record:
- the amount of cloud cover [1] - the barometric pressure [1]
- the symbol for the present weather [1]
14. Which weather-station model shows an air pressure of 993.4 millibars?
