Conjugation of verbs!

Herr Marshall

Present Tense:

“wohnen” is a verb in infinitive form. The English equivalent is “to live”

“to” is the sign of infinitive in English. In German, the sign of infinitive is “en” which is at the end of the root/verb. In order to conjugate the verbs = in English you drop the “to”. In German, you do the same thing. Drop the “en”!

“wohnen” becomes then “wohn” which is the root or stem of the verb. All the personal pronouns have the same stem or root which is “wohn” here.

First person singular: ich wohn__ = I live

Second person singular = one familiar person du wohn__ = you live

Third person singular er, sie es wohn__ =he, she, it live_

First person plural wir wohn__ = we live

Second person plural (you guys) ihr wohn__ = you live

Third person plural sie wohn__ = they live

Polite form of addressing Sie wohn__ = YOU live

(You Sir, You Madam)

Now you have to add the endings for present tense which are the following:

For ich = -e For wir = -en

For du = -st For ihr = -t

For er, sie, es = -t For sie = -en

For Sie = -en

So the conjugation of “wohnen” = to live is then the following:

ich wohne = I live

du wohnst = you live (singular, one familiar person)

er wohnt = he lives (Third person singular, masculine)

sie wohnt = she lives (third person singular, feminine)

es wohnt = it lives (third person singular, neuter)

wir wohnen = we live (first person plural)

ihr wohnt = you (guys) live (second person plural)

sie wohnen = they live (third person plural)

Sie wohnen = you sir, you madam live (polite form of addressing others)

This is how all the regular verbs are conjugated. You need to MEMORIZE these endings!
