Basic Lesson Plan- EXAMPLE
Purpose: Students will articulate events that led up to the Revolutionary War (Social Studies State standard 7.4; course objective #17; ) This objective is important to the study of early U. S. history and learning about the causes of events is critical in studying history. The causes of the Revolutionary War are “big idea” in this course.
Behavioral Objective: When given a 9X12 piece of white paper, writing utensils, and the verbal prompt: Draw or list at least 5 events that led up to the Revolutionary War, the student will correctly draw or list 5 items noted from the textbook and/or class lecture on 2 out of 2 occasions with 80% accuracy.
Materials:
Social studies text, Understanding U. S. History Volume 1---Through the Civil War
Video on Revolutionary War: Its Causes and Consequences (20 minutes) from school library
Worksheet/Guided notes to accompany the video
White paper for each student
Writing utensils for each student
Crossword puzzle on Revolutionary War
Lesson Sequence(Procedure)
1. Welcome students back to class after the week end
2. Last Friday, we concluded our study on the New England colonies. Let’s review a few facts about the New England colonies. What was the climate like? (colder than other colonies, long and cold winters, short and mild summers, short growing season)What was the geography like? (Mostly hills and rocky soil, mountains and valleys, not too much flat land)What did they grow for crops? (corn, oats, barley and rye. Most farmers needed to also work in another trade to make a living)Who did they trade with?(England and the Caribbean)
3. Today we will begin our new unit on the Revolutionary War. We will be doing some reading in our text, watching a short video on the Revolutionary War, completing a video sheet, and discussing the events that caused the Revolutionary War. The main objective of today’s lesson is for you to describe at least 5 events that led up to, or caused this War.
4. Review any student behavioral and/or academic expectations. such as: I expect you to listen to myself and others in class, raise your hand to speak, follow along quietly during the video, and be able to list 5 causes of the Revolutionary War.
5. What do you know about the Revolutionary War? Write student responses on board or flip chart. What else would you like to learn about this important war? (Use K-W-L format)
6. Let’s read a little in our text to see if those ideas are correct. With teacher, students orally read pages 99-101 in text. First, go over the vocabulary words on page 99 (top). Call on students to volunteer to read. Stop and answer comprehension questions from each paragraph. (Answers to comprehension questions are in teacher’s guide, pages 125-128).
7. Our video for today illustrates many of the points from our chapter. As we watch the video, complete the answers on your video sheet. Fill in each blank with a word. Show video. (Answer key to video sheet accompanies this lesson plan.)
8. Go over answers to video sheet with class. Discuss any questions.
9. Go back to flip chart: What did we L (Learn) from our reading and the video about the Revolutionary War? Emphasize the 5 causes of the Revolutionary War.
10. Put flip chart away and collect student video response sheets. Distribute paper to class with instructions to write or draw 5 causes of the Revolutionary War. For one point extra credit, they can write or draw one interesting fact they remember from the text or video. Remind students to do their own work; this is an independent assignment.
11. When individuals are done, they may begin the crossword puzzle on the Revolutionary War. (Answer key for crossword puzzle accompanies this lesson plan).
12. About 2 minutes before class is to be dismissed, as closure ask: So, what were some causes of the Revolutionary War? What were some interesting things you learned today from the text or video?
13. Provide feedback to students on their behavior and work. I was pleased with how you raised your hand to make a comment in class. You also remembered the 5 causes of the War. Tomorrow we will role play the various trade laws that were mentioned in our video. You are now dismissed for lunch.
14. Assessment will be 1) the video sheet and 2) their own paper of listing or drawing the 5 causes
15. Students must have 4 out of 5 causes of the War correct on their paper to have met this lesson objective.
