Adrian Alker has been a Church of England priest for 32 years, serving in the dioceses of Liverpool, Carlisle, Sheffield and Ripon and Leeds. He has served the church as a curate in Liverpool, a diocesan youth officer in Cumbria, a parish priest in Sheffield and in diocesan management in his present post.
Having been greatly influenced by the work of the Jesus Seminar, Adrian set up the St Marks Centre for Radical Christianity in Sheffield, which continues to welcome theologians, writers and speakers from across the UK and beyond. Adrian was made an honorary canon of Sheffield Cathedral in 2005 and in 2008 received an honorary degree from the University of Sheffield for his services to the community.
Adrian has a passion for Christian education, encouraging church members to think critically about the scriptures and the Christian life and to see the outworkings of faith in the transformation of lives and of communities. He believes that all churches can be places of welcome, inclusion, healing and challenge, unafraid to ask the big questions and committed to following the Kingdom teachings and practices of Jesus.
Adrian is currently convenor of the editorial group which publishes a series of Christian resources under the general title ‘Together in Hope’ and has written a book in that series entitled ‘Christmas: Ancient Meanings, Modern Faith’.
At this day conference, Adrian will lead us on a journey beginning with a faith centred on the historical Jesus, through the emergence of a Church-shaped Christianity to the hope of a Jesus-shaped church and its contribution to a Christian-shaped life.
Despite all its shortcomings, Adrian will share his belief that churches of all traditions and denominations can be channels of the transforming love of God as seen in Jesus. In dialogue with conference members Adrian hopes that this day will be one of mutual learning and encouragement.
