Tutoring at the English Corner

  1. Students will usually be visiting a tutor by appointment, in groups of 2 to 5, for one hour per week. The staff of EC may assign walk-in students to a group if a group is not too large.
  2. The sessions need to take place within the Corner or at the Speech Square.

Activities at the English Corner

  1. Special events are an important part of the Corner’s functioning – these include the Welcome Party, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and the Farewell Party. All tutors are expected to contribute to the success of these events.
  2. Other activities – depending on your specific skills – might include Movie Time, reading activities, introduction to your school, cooking workshops, drawing lessons, and other language workshops (e.g. Spanish). Feel free to propose activities.
  3. All events and activities will contribute towards the 20 hours of service.

Tidiness

  1. Please help keep the Corner tidy at all times, and encourage students to do the same.

Attitude

  1. Sessions at the Corner work best when tutors and students interact with the appropriate enthusiasm.
  2. Having a planned and structured session can help make an interesting session. Topics for discussion can come from either the tutor or the student.
  3. An important quality of a good tutor is the ability to gauge the needs of students.
  4. Patience and politeness are also important qualities.
  5. If, at any point, you feel that sessions are not working out, or if any communication problems occur, please ask the staff for assistance.

Service time and Break:

  1. English Tutors service schedule will be determined each semester in accordance with your class schedule.
  2. The international English tutors are allowed a fifteen (15) minutes break if scheduled to serve four (4) consecutive hours on duty.

Evaluation and Questionnaire

  1. A midterm evaluation of tutors will be conducted. Tutors will be given feedback based on comments from students.

Corner Resources

  1. A wide variety of magazines are available to all visitors.
  2. A DVD viewing room is available for instructional use.
  3. Handouts can be given to students if requested one day in advance.
  4. Other audio visual equipment is available upon request.

Safety and General Well-being

  1. With an extensive bus system and a modern MRT, public transportation in Taipei is convenient, inexpensive and safe. Traffic injuries and fatalities involving scooters and motorcycles are a serious problem in Taiwan. Tutors are strongly discouraged from riding on such vehicles. Pedestrian areas can sometimes be chaotic, so be cautious when using the sidewalk and crosswalks.
  1. Although the city water is generally safe, please avoid drinking water directly from the tap. Shih Hsin has many water machines throughout the campus and inexpensive bottled water can be purchased from any convenience store.
  1. Taiwan has many culinary delights, but please try new foods in moderation. Give your digestive system a chance to get used to the different spices and cooking styles.
