OBJECTIVES

Thegoal of thejoint Pharm.D./MBA program is to educate students to assume responsibilities as executives and administrators in pharmaceutical industryand in health caredeliverysystems that provide pharmaceuticalcareto patients. The program is directed toward providingdidactic and experiential education to students that will allow them to: (1) understand the majoradministrative functions in organizations delivering pharmaceutical products and careto patients;and (2) design strategies andpolicies to copewith the evolvinghealth care environment.

Theprincipal objectiveof theMBA program is topreparestudents forsuccessful careers in management positions in business and administration. The curriculumis structured so that students mayconcentrate their studies in specialty area such as competitive strategy, entrepreneurship, finance, marketing, human resourcemanagement,globalmanagement, information systems and operations management.TheMBA degreeprogram is designed to give students (1) conceptual knowledge forunderstandingthefunctions and behaviors common to allorganizations and (2) the analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills essential for effectivemanagement.

PROGRAMDESCRIPTION

Candidates forthis program must first meet the entrancerequirements and be accepted into the Doctor ofPharmacydegreeprogram in the Collegeof Pharmacy. PharmD students mayapplyto the MBA program in the Graduate School ofBusinessafter successfulcompletion oftheir first professionalyear. TheAdmissionsCommittee forthe MBAPrograms reviews and selects students for admission to thejoint degreeprogram. The joint and combined degree programs share class credits, meaning the credits are counted towards both degree programs, and typically will extend your duration of study by one year. Theprogram is not open to students who have alreadyearned one ofthe degrees. A studentmustsatisfythe curriculum requirements foreach degree.

Participants begin their studies in theCollegeof Pharmacyand complete the first two years oftheDoctor of Pharmacycurriculum. Thethirdyear is devoted to core course requirements in Business Administration. Duringthe fourth andfifthyears students mayregister in both colleges concurrently.

Thejoint degreecurriculumprovides foratotal of48 credits required fortheMBA degree,

36 credits taken within theCollegeof Business and12 credits taken withinthe Collegeof

Pharmacy. The traditional MBA curriculum is designed for individuals with diverse academic and professional backgrounds. No previous courses in business administration are required or expected of candidates.

Theprogram designrecognizes the importanceofthe various functional areas of management and thehigh probabilitythat the career ofasuccessful manager will span many functions. It provides a broad foundation ofstudycoveringallaspects of management, plus an opportunityto develop a concentration in one ofseveral areas.

All MBA courses areoffered in eight-week modules, two modules per semester. In allcourses, the MBA program strives tomaximizestudent-professor dialoguethrough dynamic and interactiveteaching.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Admission to the FloridaMBA Program is veryselective. In reviewingapplications, the AdmissionsCommitteelooks for evidenceof intellectual ability, managerial promise and communityinvolvement. Stronginterpersonal skills, communication ability, motivation, maturity, career focus and leadership potential are also important qualities in prospective students. Applicants with twoor more years offulltime post-baccalaureatework experienceare particularly attractive candidates for the joint degree program.

TheAdmissionsCommitteein theGraduate School of Business reviews the candidate’s academic record, scoreson the GraduateManagement Admission Test (GMAT), and work experience. Inaddition, the committee considersmaturityand personal qualities of leadership as indicated bytheapplicant’s letters of recommendation and other activities. Applicants arestronglyencouraged to submit letters of recommendation from employers. Written essays arerequired and an interview maybenecessary.

There areno specific prerequisite courserequirements, although somebackgroundin statistics, calculus, and financial accountingmaybehelpful.

Pharmacystudents should express their interest in this program duringthefirst professional year and seek theadviceand direction ofthefacultymember in theDepartment of Pharmaceutical Outcomes andPolicywho servesas a Program Coordinator forthe joint degreecurriculumwith theGraduate School ofBusiness.

New students areaccepted to the joint PharmD MBA program for the fallsemester. TheUniversityof FloridaMBA Program uses a rollingadmissions process bywhichapplications areconsidered as theyare received. Applicants arehighly encouraged to applyasearlyas possible. Specificprocedures anddeadlines areoutlined in an application form, which can beobtained from theweb site.

Applicants who haveat least a 3.2gradepointaverage andaGraduate Management Admission Test (GMAT)scoregreater than 640 are especiallyencouraged to apply. Applicants maytaketheGMAT at anytime priorto applyingfortheprogram in the second professionalyear oftheDoctor ofPharmacyprogram. Applicants foradmission must submit satisfactoryscores on theGMAT as wellas transcripts for allprevious academicwork.

Students must petitiontheAcademicand Professional StandardsCommitteein theCollegeof Pharmacyfortheopportunityto begin theMBAprogram after the second professionalyear of studies in theDoctor ofPharmacyprogram.

Students should maintain regular contact with the ProgramCoordinator in theCollegeof Pharmacy. Thesupport and endorsement oftheDepartment of PharmaceuticalOutcomes and Policyforthe student’s application is required bythe Collegeof Pharmacy.

GMAT

TheGraduate Management Admission Test is a nationallystandardized skills test available anytime oftheyear at test centers throughout theworld. Business schoolsuse test scores to help evaluatecandidates’reading, reasoning, andproblem-solvingabilities. TheGMAT is a standardized assessment. Each individual test that is administered containsthe same format and areas of content. Thetest iscomprised ofthreemain sections: analytical writing, quantitative reasoning, and verbal reasoning.

It is recommended thatapplicants takethe GMATanytime duringtheyearpriorto theiryear of admission. Details regardingtheGMATare availableat
