  1. How do I become a student Preceptor?

  1. How long are rotations?

Rotations are typically 4 weeks long.

  1. How are students scheduled with Preceptors?

Students are scheduled based on Preceptor availability

  1. Can students rotate with other providers in the group?

Yes – students can rotate with any provider including nurses, PAs, NPs and midwives.

  1. What is a fellow?

There are two types of fellows OMM and Anatomy. OMM and Anatomy fellows spend a fifth year on campus for additional training in anatomy and or OMM.

  1. How do I access my evaluation?

An email is sent out by New Innovations five days before the rotation ends. This email contains user name and password in order to log in and complete the evaluation.

  1. What type of feedback should be given for a student on an evaluation?

It is most beneficial to the student if a Preceptor gives specific feedback about the student he/she worked with. Two examples of valuable comments are:Please be specific for example:

“Student relates well to patients and fellow staff members. She does performs excellent histories, gathering all relevant information, and builds rapport with her patients. She respects her patients and they love her for that and her patience and humor with them. Her physicals are complete, and focused, as needed. Her ability to formulate an assessment came a long way during this rotation, as did her ability to put together an appropriate treatment plan. This student was a pleasure to work with. She'll be an asset to any residency program lucky enough to get her.”

Or

“Obtains complete history, however, takes a very long time. Presentations are comprehensive but often withextraneous information, has a tendency to struggle with presenting information that is case related. At times missed significant physical findings. It is obvious that student is trying hard and working hard to improve his historytaking skills and presentation skills. Needs to work on time management skills.Has difficult time taking materialfrom article and applying to a patient scenario.”

  1. Are there any work hour restrictions for medical students?

There are no work hour restrictions for medical students. Students should have a realistic exposure to the life of a medical provider. Students should work the same schedule as their Preceptor and can volunteer for extra hours if available.

  1. How do you handle absences from rotations?

If a student is absent for one or two days, Preceptors have the authority to excuse them. If a student in requesting an absence of more than two days, the student must contact Clinical Affairs to document the absence.

  1. When does the rotation end?

If the student is taking aSsubjecteExam, the rotation ends on the 4th Thursday of the rotation at 5:00PM. If a student does not have aSsubject Eexam then the rotation ends at 5:00PM on the 4th Friday of the rotation.

  1. Should we give students study days for theirSsubject Eexams?

No, study days should not be given for the Ssubject Eexams during the 4 week rotation.

  1. Do students work holidays?

This is up to the discretion of the Preceptor, RVU prefers students to work the same schedule of the preceptor.

  1. What do I do about EMR access for students?

Studentsshould contact their clinical coordinator for any and all issues concerning EMR access.

  1. How do I get access to the University’s electronic library?

  1. What type of didactics are provided for students?

Students are required to attend didactic session for Surgery and OBGYN. These sessions are provided by campus faculty. RVU will support sites that are interested in providing other didactic session for students during rotations.

  1. What is the preceptor’s responsibility when a needle stick occurs?

The Ppreceptor has no responsibility. The student should contact an RVU representative immediately.
