MATERIALS

A Yarn Needle.

Medium pom pon maker.

TENSION/GAUGE

9 sts to 10 cm (4 ins) over stocking st, using 8.00mm (US 11), (UK 0) Knitting Needles and 2 strands of C1 together.

Note - Correct tension (gauge) is essential for a succesful handknit.

ABBREVIATIONS

K - Knit, P - Purl, st/s - stitch/es, stocking st - 1 row K, 1 row P, RS - right side, WS - wrong side, sl - slip st purlways, K2tog - knit 2 sts together, psso - pass slipped stitch over, P3tog - purl 3 sts together.

CREATE

HAT

Using 8.00mm (US 11), (UK 0) Needles and 1 strand of C2, cast on 48 sts.

Work 10 rows stocking st.

Break off C2.

Using 2 strands of C1 together throughout -

Next row - K2tog, knit to last 2 sts, K2tog = 46 sts.

Work in stocking st (beginning with a purl row) for a further 12 cm (5 ins), ending with a purl row.

Shape crown

1st row - K2tog, knit to last 2 sts, K2tog = 44 sts.

2nd row - Purl.

3rd row - K5, * K2tog, K9, repeat from * to last 6 sts, K2tog, K4 = 40 sts.

Work 3 rows stocking st, beginning with a purl row.

7th row - K5, * K2tog, K8, repeat from * to last 5 sts, K2tog, K3 = 36 sts.

Work 3 rows stocking st, beg with a purl row.

11th row - K5, * K2tog, K7, repeat from * to last 4 sts, K2tog, K2 = 32 sts.

Work 3 rows stocking st, beginning with a purl row.

15th row - K5, * K2tog, K6, repeat from * to last 3 sts, K2tog, K1 = 28 sts.

16th and following alt rows - Purl.

17th row - K5, * K2tog, K5, repeat from * to last 2 sts, K2tog = 24 sts.

19th row - K2tog, K3, * K2tog, K4, repeat from * to last st, K1 = 20 sts.

21st row - K2tog, K2, * K2tog, K3, repeat from * to last st, K1 = 16 sts.

FINISHING

DO NOT PRESS. Using yarn needle, darn in ends. Using appropriate colours and back-stitch, join centre back seam, reversing seam for half of C2 section at cast on edge. Using C2, make a medium size pom pon and attach to top of hat. Fold C2 section at cast on in half onto right side.
