1-3 What are the needs of organisms?
I. Energy
- All organisms need energy.
- Autotrophs-make their own food. (plants)
- Heterotrophs-must “eat”. (animals and fungi, bacteria etc.)
II. Water
- All organisms need water.
- All food is dissolved in water.
- All your chemical reactions. (digestion)0
III. Air
- All organisms need air.
- Oxygen is used to make energy.
- Carbon dioxide is used by plants to make food. (sugar)
IV. Temperature
- Living things need a certain range of temperature.
- Warm blooded-temperature stays constant.
- Cold blooded-temperature can change.(hot, sunny or cool, shady)
- Homeostasis-is the ability to stay the same.
V. Living Space
- A living space must have food, water, sunlight, and shelter.
2-8 How do cells obtain energy?
I. Cells & Energy
- Cells need energy to: grow, repair structures, create cell parts, and reproduce
- Energy can come from
- The sun
- The food you eat
II. Photosynthesis
- Plant cells can make food using energy from sunlight
- Photosynthesis happens in the chloroplast
- Details
- The chemical equation: CO2 + H20 (Sunlight) C6H12O6 + O2
- Energy from Sunlight breaks water
- Oxygen is released then
- Batteries are recharged (ATP & NADPH)
- Batteries are used in the Calvin Cycle
- Calvin Cycle makes Sugar (C6H12O6)
- Sugar is made from Carbon Dioxide (CO2)
III. Cellular Respiration
- Uses food to make energy for a cell
- Happens in the mitochondria
- The food which is main “fuel” is glucose (sugar)
- Plant cells make their own food (fuel)
- Animals have to eat something else in order to get food (fuel)
- Chemical equation of Cellular Respiration is the same equation as Photosynthesis, but it is sdrawkcab.
- C6H12O6 + O2 CO2 + H20 + ENERGY (ATP)
- ATP is IMPORTANT to life because it is the main molecule of ENERGY. It is like a battery which cells use for power.
IV. Fermentation
- Releasing energy from food without using oxygen.
- Alcoholic Fermentation: happens in yeast
- Lactic Acid Fermentation: happens in animals

1-4 How do organisms use energy?
- Life Processes
- All organisms carry out the life processes needed to stay alive.
- Ingestion & Digestion
- Living things need food because it gives nutrients.
- Nutrients are chemical substances that are needed for growth and energy.
- Organisms need to take in food (ingestion) and change food into a useable form to use its nutrients (digestion).
- Cellular Respiration
- Process by which organisms get energy from food
- Excretion
- Getting rid of waste products formed by life processes.
- Transport
- Moving of nutrients and waste products.
