Required Personal Protective Equipment: CSA approved safety glasses or goggles, CSA approved steel-toed footwear, 100% cotton coveralls preferred, and hearing protection

GENERAL NOTES: The function of the chop saw is to cut metal tubing, extrusions, and angels at various lengths and angles. Proper Use: the metal chop saw is equipped with a replaceable abrasive type cutting wheel or disc. The table of the chop saw is equipped with a clamping fixture, moveable to various angles, to allow for holding the material to be cut in position. No lighters, matches or cell phones are allowed in the shop area. Long necklaces, bracelets and rings should be removed. Long hair should be tied back. Strings and hoods hanging from pullovers/sweaters should be removed or tucked inside of coveralls.

1 / 1) Ensure a clean work area.--2) Personal protective equipment (protective eyewear, footwear, 100% cotton coveralls, and hearing protection - per RETSD policy).-- / 1) Trip/Fall--2) Numerous injuries can occur when not wearing PPE.-- / 1) Good housekeeping - clean up area and keep it clean. Clear away any debris. Pickup and put away tools that you are not using.--2) Always wear the required personal protective equipment.--
2 / Remove all jewelry (rings, necklace, and bracelets). Tie back long hair. Watch that strings from clothing are not hanging down - all present a hazard - all may be caught in saw. / Head injury (hair ripped from scalp) --Neck injury (bruising, strangulation)--Hand injury (bruising, cuts, amputation)-- / Tie back hair.--Remove all jewelry. --Remove clothing with strings at neckline.--
3 / 1) Check saw - make sure all safety guards and covers are in place. Do not use any saw without safety guards and covers. 2) Check electrical cord make sure the cord is not frayed or cracked. Do not use if cord is frayed or cracked / 1) Amputation of arm and or hand. Cuts on arm and or hand.--2) Electrocution, burns-- / 1) Ensure that safety guards and covers are on saw. --2) Ensure that electrical cords are not frayed and or cracked. --Do not use saw. Tell instructor/teacher and coworkers that saw is damaged. Have saw removed from shop area and or have a lock out tag placed on saw.--
4 / 1) Gather all necessary tools to remove and install correct cutting disc, before starting machine. 2) Use the appropriate cutting disc for the material being cut. If not sure which cutting disc to use check manual and check with instructor/teacher. 3) Never attempt to use the chop saw with a damaged, cracked or broken cut-off disc. Serious injury may be the result. / 2) Amputation of arm and or hand. Cuts on arm and or hand.--3) Pieces of disc - breaking off and becoming a projectiles.-- / 2) Ensure that safety guards and covers are on saw.--3) Check all cut-off discs before they are installed on saw.--
5 / 1) Secure the material at the desired angle to the table via the clamping fixture. 2) If cutting a long length of material make sure it is properly supported at both ends of the material to prevent injury to the operator/s / 1) Material can slip if not clamped down and shoot back at operator causing bruising, puncture.--2) Material can slip or fall causing injury to operator, damage to cutting disc, damage to saw.-- / 1) Use clamps to secure material.--2) Ensure material is supported at both end if cutting a long length.--
6 / A dust mask may be required for certain types of materials. / Respiratory / Consult Material Safety Data Sheets regarding material.
7 / Be aware of heat build up from the cutting operation. Do not exert excessive force when cutting; let the disc do the work. Wait for the chop saw to come to a complete stop before retrieving your work. / Amputation and or cuts / Stop saw and wait for disc to stop spinning before retrieving your work.
8 / Clean the area of debris after use with a brush and not bare hands. / Puncture/s to finger/s or hand/s from the metal shavings.--Cut to finger/s or hand/s.-- / Use a brush to clean away debris.
9 / Slow the chop saw in the down position when you are done with the machine. / Saw disk may come down on hand and cause cuts or puncture the skin. / Slow saw in the down position.
