DIRECTOR of MUSIC

The role of the Director of Music/Organist of Glasgow Cathedral includes the following responsibilities:

Participating in and contributing to any activities associated with the provision of music in Glasgow Cathedral and extending the role of the Cathedral in the local community.

Playing the organ for services on Sunday morning and evening.

Playing the organ for special services such as: Christmas Eve Service Christmas Day, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday

Playing the organ for other services such as weddings and funerals

Arranging soloists and instrumental players for services as required

Coordinating and directing weekly choir rehearsals

Planning and Organisation:

Assisting the Minister in the planning of music of the Cathedral

Working with the choir to ensure a good working relationship

Developing the choir and expanding its repertoire

Maintain a good association with the Music Committee (Minister & four members of the Kirk Session)

Creating and distributing rehearsal schedules for the choir members

Working with the librarian to ensure music is secured safely

Arranging appropriate deputies to cover holidays and in the event of unavoidable absences

Ensuring that the Kirk Session is advised when maintenance of the organ is required

Developing a good working relationship with the RSAMD and musicians in local universities

THE PERSON

The successful candidate will have an understanding of liturgy, a commitment to the post, a desire to work collaboratively and a willingness to participate in the wider musical life the Cathedral.

The person appointed will meet many of the following requirements:

Knowledge:

  • Has an exceptional level of musical ability
  • Has successful experience of working in a Church environment
  • Has experience of working with and developing choirs
  • Has a wide knowledge of choral & Church repertoire

Skills:

  • Has an interest in and commitment to fostering good vocal technique and high singing standards
  • Has the ability to secure soloists, extra singers and instrumentalists when required
  • Has effective communication skills
  • Has well developed skills to allow effective working in small groups
  • Has experience of budget management
  • Has experience of current regulatory requirements (copyright, disclosure, health & safety etc)

Personal Qualities:

  • Is dynamic, inspirational and enthusiastic
  • Is able to build a good rapport with choir, musicians, clergy, Kirk Session and congregation
  • Has a good sense of humour whilst able to command respect
  • Is punctual and reliable
