What is the Voucher Scheme?

Following an assessment by a Clinician, an NHS funded wheelchair will be prescribed for you. However, you may want to have a different chair, maybe one that is lighter or a different colour. If this is the case, you may be able to use the Voucher Scheme to assist you. There are 2 voucher options available.

The Partnership Voucher

In this scheme the NHS will contribute an amount which is the same value as your prescribed wheelchair.Should you wish to choose a more expensive chair from an NHS approved list, you will need to pay any additional costs.

The NHS will still own the chair and will carry outrepairs and maintenance. All of the normal conditions of loan will apply. This option is not available for powered wheelchairs.

The Independent Voucher

In this scheme you will be given an amount which is the same value as your prescribed wheelchair and a one off payment to cover repair and maintenance costs.

It will thenbeyour responsibility to order your own chair and organise repairs for it.The wheelchair you choose will havetomeet your mobility andpostural needs and be in the same category as the chair prescribed for you e.g. manual, powered indoor, powered outdoor etc.

This wheelchair becomes your property and your responsibility.

How long does the voucher last and what if I want to change my wheelchair?

Equipment is typically provided for a period of 5 years, but under certain circumstances a change to the length of voucher may be considered.

Changes or additions to the equipment provided are not permittedfor the duration of your voucher, unless there has been a significant change in your clinical condition. This will be discussed with your wheelchair therapist at your assessment.

Can everyone use the voucher scheme?

During assessment you will be advised if you are eligible for the scheme. If you are under 18 or have a deteriorating medical condition andare likely to have frequent changes to your wheelchair requirements, it may not be appropriate to use the voucher scheme, or the length of the voucher may be adjusted to suit your needs.

How do I start using the vouchers?

Your assessor will talk to you at your assessment about the voucher schemes. You will be sent a pack containing details of your prescription, the value of your prescribed chair and details on how to proceed.

How will I know what I need to pay towards a partnership voucher?

We will invoice you with the amount after you have received your chair.

How do I get my wheelchair repaired or maintained?

If you bought your chair with a Partnership Voucher you can contact Hertfordshire Wheelchair Service’s approved repairer.

If you used the Independent Voucher you are responsible for arranging and paying for all repairs and maintenance. An amount for this is included in the voucher value.

How do I choose a wheelchair with the Independent Voucher?

You will need to contact an approved supplier who accepts the voucher and give them your wheelchair prescription. Any wheelchair you choose must meet this prescription. We will offer advice to ensure that an appropriate wheelchair is chosen.

Can I just go ahead and buy the wheelchair?

The Wheelchair Service needs to approve your choice before your voucher is issued. Vouchers cannot be issued retrospectively i.e. you cannot buy a chair and then ask for a voucher.

What if my wheelchair costs less than the Independent Voucher payment offered to me?

In this case the NHS would keep a fund for repair and maintenance of your wheelchair. You can present receipts for repairs and this will be paid to you out of the fund until it is used up.

needs if you still wish to have a voucher from our service.
