Saugus Track and Field Team: Information and Expectations
Mission:
Our mission is to safely provide students with athletic training and competition in an environment that stresses the values of dedication, teamwork, fair play, integrity, sportsmanship, and self-improvement.
All athletes, parents, and coaches should conduct themselves in a manner that models a commitment to this goal while demonstrating the strongest concern for the reputation of the team and Saugus High School.
Communications:
Attendance by parents and athletes at appropriate meetings is essential to good communications.
Most questions, concerns, and misunderstandings can be cleared up with contact by email:
Head Coach, Sprints: Christian Standley()
Distance: Rene Paragas ()
Throws: Art Baldi (
Long Jump/Triple Jump: Frank Joga ()
Academics:
A 2.0 GPA is the CIF's minimum to participate in athletics.
Struggling students should seek guidance from the coaches as soon as possible each
quarter. Also, students must attend all classes the day of the meet. An administrator must clear any exceptions before 8:00 AM on the day of the meet.
Success/Winning:
With the exception of psychological tactics, Track and Field is a sport without a defense. Since we basically cannot control or influence our competition, meets become an arena to challenge ourselves and beat our own times or marks. As a general philosophy, Track and Field is about the athlete, his/her placement, and the clock. Athletes focused on this will work to consistently improve their performance. The frequency of personal records (PR’s) will be a major indicator of individual and team success. While it is gratifying to see Saugus runners win races and meets, one must also applaud individuals and teams that defeat our dedicated athletes. We must celebrate the success of all.
Equipment:
Students need appropriate training shoes and attire for workouts. Uniforms are to be worn on the bus to and from all competitions.
Letters and Awards:
Season awards (e.g. Most Improved etc.) and varsity/junior varsity letters will be rewarded at the coaches' discretion. Participation, attendance, improvement, behavior, and talent will all be considered. Athletes dropped from the squad due to poor grades or for disciplinary reasons will not receive awards at the banquet.
Travel/Buses
Students must be on their top behavior while traveling; no standing, singing, yelling, walking or moving about when the bus is traveling. No eating or drinking on the bus. Nothing goes outside open windows. Nothing is to be thrown on the bus. Since these rules are a matter of everyone’s safety, failure to obey bus rules may result in immediate dismissal from the team.
Consequences
Participation on the Track and Field team is a privilege. This privilege can be revoked at anytime for egregious or dangerous behavior. Fighting, theft, profanity directed at coaches, other athletes or officials, and defiance may all result in dismissal from the team without previous warnings.
Smaller offenses will be dealt with using a three strikes system. Athletes will receive warnings for problems such as profanity, truancy, failure to complete/participate in workouts/stretching, failure to help with clean ups, failure to dress, failure to follow coach’s directions, etc. Warnings will be given verbally and then recorded. They may include suspension from practices or meets. After the second warning, parents will be notified. After the third offense athletes will be dropped from the team.
Attendance/Grades
Grades will be based on the following criteria:
A= Attending all or nearly all practices.
Participating in all of the league meets and a majority of the invitationals.
Giving an honest effort in every workout.
Consistently helping with clean up/set up.
B= Missing some practices.
Participating in all of the league meets and in invitational meets.
Giving an honest effort in most workouts.
Frequently participating with clean up/set up.
C= Inconsistently attending practices.
Missing a league meet or not participating in invitationals.
Giving sporadic effort in workouts.
Infrequently participating in clean up/set up.
Students failing to earn at least a C will be dropped from the team.
