A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
TO RECOGNIZE AND COMMEND ONE OF SOUTH CAROLINA’S MOST OUTSTANDING EDUCATORS, MRS. LYDIA D. SANDIFORD OF RICHLAND COUNTY, FOR AN EXEMPLARY CAREER SPANNING OVER FIFTYONE YEARS AS A TEACHER UPON THE OCCASION OF HER RETIREMENT AS AN ENGLISH TEACHER AND COORDINATOR OF EXIT EXAM TESTING AT COLUMBIA HIGH SCHOOL AND TO EXTEND TO HER BEST WISHES IN ALL OF HER FUTURE ENDEAVORS.
Whereas, Mrs. Lydia D. Sandiford was a member of the first graduating class of C. A. Johnson High School in Columbia, South Carolina, in 1950 and a 1954 graduate of Allen University in Columbia, South Carolina, with a major in English; and
Whereas, she regularly upgraded her teaching foundation by taking additional courses at Columbia College, Indiana State University, South Carolina State University, and Benedict College, and by attending workshops and seminars offered through Richland School District One or other school districts; and
Whereas, Mrs. Sandiford pursued and received a Masters degree in Secondary Reading and Reading Coordinator from the University of South Carolina in 1976; and
Whereas, immediately following her graduation from Allen University in 1954, Mrs. Sandiford began her classroom duties as a teacher of English at C. A. Johnson High School, where she met and married her husband, Coach Kenneth F. Sandiford; and
Whereas, after taking some time off from teaching for her family of a daughter and three sons, she returned to the classroom to teach English and social studies for twelve years at W. A. Perry Middle School; and, after the integration of public schools in 1971, Mrs. Sandiford was assigned to teach English at Columbia High School, where she remained for thirtyone years as teacher of English and as Coordinator of Exit Exam Testing until her retirement in May 2005; and
Whereas, in 1991, she was selected by the faculty and staff as “The Columbia High School Teacher of the Year for 19911992”, and in May 2004, Mrs. Sandiford received the very prestigious “Christine Webb Humanitarian Award” for “Dedication to Columbia High School; Compassion and Fairness Toward Mankind; and Belief in the Goodness of Man”; and
Whereas, she was most recently recognized upon her retirement when the members of the Richland District One School Board awarded her a plaque for fiftyone years of dedicated service to the students of Richland County School District One; and
Whereas, she is an active member of Saint John Baptist Church, where she has worked with the Evening Tutorial Program, and has been a member of the Brookland Baptist Church Foundation for five years where she is currently the chairperson of the After School Tutorial Ministry; she serves as journalist for the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and recording secretary for the Columbia, South Carolina, Branch of the National Association of University Women; and
Whereas, she is the doting grandmother of four grandchildren. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize and commend one of South Carolina’s most outstanding educators, Mrs. Lydia D. Sandiford of Richland County, for an exemplary career spanning fiftyone years as a teacher upon the occasion of her retirement as an English teacher and Coordinator of Exit Exam Testing at Columbia High School and extend to her best wishes in all of her future endeavors.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs. Lydia D. Sandiford.
