The Student Council is an integral part of Integrated College Dungannon and was set up in the college’s first year.

“At ICD, we listen to the concerns and opinions of our students because we recognise that if students are happy at college they are more likely to succeed” – Mrs Yvonne Beggs, Student Council Co-ordinator.

The Student Council consists of students who have been elected by their form classes to represent them.

Each year Student Council members elect a committee including a Chairperson, Vice Chairperson and Secretary who organise their meetings and events throughout the year.

The opinion of the Student Council is greatly valued at ICD and the Chair and Vice Chair of the Student Council attend meetings of the Board of Governors to voice the opinions and ideas of students at the college.

Throughout the year the Student Council are involved in debate on day-to-day college issues, they help to review college policies and they organise fundraising and social events.

Address by the Chairperson (Michal Jurkowski) for the Academic Year 2011/2012

As the chairperson of the Student Council at Integrated College Dungannon, I gained an insight into the process of decision making at the college.

I was able to raise students' suggestions, feedback and concerns with the principal, Mr. Sleeth, during meetings when we considered and addressed the minutes after each meeting of the council.

The Chair of the Student Council also attends each Board of Governor meeting to discuss Student Council suggestions and provide a voice for students during decision making.

I have learned to look at the role of the Board of Governors from a different perspective. My experience has shown me the importance of communicating essential information effectively and also ways of raising and addressing relevant issues. I was also able to see how ideas for various events organised at the college, are put forward.

My position in the Student Council has been a pleasant and insightful experience and has enabled me to contribute to the continuing growth and development of the college.
