Formative Assessment, Assessment Items
“GLEs” for high school?
Formative Assessments, use, guidelines
Writing good multiple choice questions
Use of misconceptions
It is really a feedback teaching loop!
I) Set Clear Learning Goals (Our State Performance Standards in Inquiry AND Concepts)
Guiding Questions (Our State Core Themes, Content Standards)
Unwrap the standards and make these goals explicit to the students. (In our curriculum for 9th/10th grade).
II) Find out where the students are now, “what do you think of when you hear….?”
Draw a concept map using these ideas and explain why?
Make students’ thinking explicit!
Establish a classroom environment conducive to formative assessment!
Students need to be safe, OK to be wrong, OK to talk about what they think.
Value their effort and give feedback.
Make sure they all understand that you believe ALL can and should learn science!
Interesting ideas/questions and connect to real life!
Strategies that elicit a range of student ideas. (see cooperative learning ideas)
Think pair share, go around, table conference, peer review, self assessment, jigsaw, debate, etc..
See student talk PD!
III) Feedback (also anticipate alternate conceptions)
Verbal, individual, written, modifying instruction, .
FORMATS:
BIG IDEA QUESTIONS
CONCEPT MAPS!
EVENTS: Predict, Observe, Explain
Evidence to Explanation
Multiple Choice Questions
FOR OCTOBER 6th:
Try a Type of formative assessment! Be prepared to share!
Bring: at least one lesson plan/lab idea to get feedback on (relating to curriculum)

CAPT PLAN SCIENCE
Richard Therrien, K-12 Science Supervisor, NHPS
Summer 09:
· Principals schedule schools to ensure that the best teachers are with low-mid level ninth (PhyChem) and tenth (Bio) graders.
· Principals identify department/data team teacher leaders.
· Supervisor, schools do data analysis of CAPT science roster, identifying strands and teachers/course correlations.
· Supervisor links quarterly assessment data and CAPT data.
·
Fall 09
· Meet with each school science team.
· Message to teachers to strictly follow pacing schedule and focus on standards.
