Parents’sensitivityto theirdeafchildren’sdiverse communicationneeds
Thisstudyinvestigatedthewaysinwhichhearingparentsdemonstratedsensitivitytotheirdeafchildren’scommunicationneedsandtheimpactoftheirresponsivenessonthechildren’slanguageoutcomes.Theparents’sensitivitywasdeterminedbymeasuringtheirqualityoflanguageinput,Auslanproficiencyandadaptationtobilingualpractices,includingaccommodationoftheirchildren’smodalitypreferences.Thechildren’sbilingualskillsweremeasuredwiththeBimodalBilingualDevelopmentScale,whichwasdevisedspecificallyforthisresearch.Thestudyfoundthat thechildrenwiththestrongestlanguageskillsweresupportedbyhighlysensitiveparentswhochangedtheirmodalityofinputto match theirchildren’slanguagepreferences.
