- RURAL PLANNING AND LAND USE
Title: Between agriculture and urbanization
I will base this workshop on a debate and examples which will lead to conclusions that can help in solving some problems of rural planning and land use. Participants will present the strategies for rural development from their country or area that they find interesting. Workshop will try to give answers to some questions: 1) Rural planning or agriculture planning or something else? 2) Rural planning and land use – soil effects (classification and quality), social effects, economic effects, spatial effects? 3) Future of rural areas – urban or rural? The workshop will pay attention to development of tourism in rural areas, as a significant actor of rural development. Off course, the problem of devastatition (extinction) of settlements will be on our menu as well. The field trip will be necessary, since some processes can be spotted only at field. At field trip we’ll try to organize some kind of questionnaire with local population, and try to identify problems which they take as serious. Special attention will be given to the problem of concentration ofpopulation from rural areas to the suburbs and to the periphery of big agglomerations.

- GIS AND REMOTE SENSING
Title:Multi-Criteria Analysis for Regional Planning with GIS and Remote Sensing Techniques
The workshop intent to present the methodology for site selection with Multi-Criteria Analysis using advanced GIS and Remote Sensing techniques. Satellite images (Landsat) will be used in combination with digital data in ERDAS 8.5 and ArcGIS software. The methodology includes geometric correction of satellite image, sampling with GPS, classification and criteria development. The final output will be the generation and the assessment of a map presenting suitable areas for sitting a specific activity.

- URBAN PLANNING
Title:CITIES OF YESTERDAY, OF TODAY AND OF THE FUTURE
The area where we live affects dramatically our daily life and our activities. But how did the urban centers evolve, why they concluded to the present state and how did the geographical position and the physical geography contribute to the creation and the development of a city? Screening the existing cities we observe that they follow specific models of planning. However what we are mainly interested in is whether these models are opereting and how they can be adapted in new tensions of way of life. The quest of the ideal city which should offer its services to every need has no answer. But finally, could digital cities be an answer to the future?

- GEOGRAPHY OF TRANSPORTATION
Title: Searching for the multimodal knots
The position of Balkans is very important for the European transportation. Two the biggest Balkan harbors and airports, Athens and Thessalonica, are situated in Greece, therefore this country is one of the most important Balkan countries in view of transportation.
In this workshop we shall analyze the number of passengers and quantity of freight (in tones) on harbors, airports, train- and bus-stations annually in Athens and Thessalonica, and traffic frequency on the motorway between this two cities. Comparing their load and capacity we shall be researching the necessity and possibility for forming another multimodal knot, and fortify their hierarchy, this is the main aim of workshop.
First of all we shall be discussing about similar situations in order European countries, theirs multimodal knots and corridors.

- IMMIGRATION
Title: Migration and Europe
We intend to start our workshop – after we have got to know each other - with a short overview concerning the history of migration in Europe, the change from an emigration-continent in the past to an immigration-continent nowadays.
After that we will collect the knowledge of the participants about migration, discuss the concrete situations in different European countries and try to search out similarities and varieties, talk about social consequences for migrants and the main societies (ethnic business, integration, assimilation, pluralistic society, ...) We also want to address the issue of reasons for migration. For a profound discussion it will be important to give the participants some advices in advance via e-mail how they should prepare themselves for the workshop and on what they should focus on when collecting national information about migration.
As results of this workshop we expect to gain a collection of national experiences and social, political and statutory backgrounds in Europe.
Finally it will be an interesting question how will be migration in Europe in the future and perhaps a comparison to other parts of the world.

- GLOBAL CAPITALISM: TRANSITION, TRANSFORMATION, AND
DEVELOPMENT
Title:Bridges or gates? – Transborder Cooperations in Europe
We will try to analyze the current cooperation programs of the EU and we will try to get an overview about the history of EU Crossborder Programs. The Participants should give examples from their country about cooperation projects. The sense, needs or not needs of such programs and the problems and challenges should be discussed in a bigger group. AS well we plan to make “politic simulation” and role plays about the topic.

- PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY
Title: Physical Geography…
.. is quite a wide topic, therefore we - your workshopleader Karsten and Maren (both landscape ecologists from EGEA Muenster, Germany) actually try to focus on one of the following topics:
-The geomorphology of Pelion - and the influence of geomorphology on myths, sayings and fairytales in Greece and Europe (a bit unusual and perhaps experimental idea, but why not??)
-The PagasitikosGulf – ecosystem dynamics (a kind of case-study work, and e.g. comparing the recent situation in Greece with other Gulfs in Europe)
It doesn’t matter which topic we will choose in the end, for both ideas we try to realize two interesting !open air fieldtrips! (we don’t want you - and us - to spend all the time insinde). Also you should be aware that each of our participants will have to prepare in advance a small (or larger we will see ;) ) presentation or homework for the workshop. We will inform you about this a few weeks before congress. Ok? Ok.
So, 2 all interested participants: please don’t hesitate to ask all questions concerning this workshop - we hope we can answer them... and we can welcome you in our workshop. CU soon in Greece.

- CULTURAL GEOGRAPHY
Title: From to the modern state – Planning policies during the last 3000 years in Greece
The idea of a democratic state was mainly influenced by greek philosophers. I want to discuss the development of the state, the government and politics over the last 3000 years. The modern planning policies are a result of a long process. The mainly ideas of modern politics and planning were born in Greece. And also the idea of a EuropeanState comes from Greece!…I want to make a connection of history-today-future

- LANDSCAPE ANALYSIS
Title:Littoral quality assessment for spatial planning
This workshop will be based on the geographical quality assessment of the sea side of a selected municipality. We will make an introduction of it (geographical location, general physical and socioecomics characterization) related to its coastline (dynamics, morphology, ecosystems, human activities, environmental and spatial conflicts and management and actuations done by the administrations), ending with some conclusions that summarize the spatial conflicts of the selected coastline and give proposals to future planning.
