Animation Assignment # 1:

In Word, answer the following questions using the Internet to research your answers. Start with the web site (Your research will be used in #6 below so keep track of it all)

  1. What is a Zoetrope? Find a picture of a Zoetrope that best shows what it is and paste it here.
  1. What is a Flipbook? Find a picture of a Flipbook that best shows what it is and paste it here. Research your own site to find this answer.
  1. What is animation? Find an animated GIF and paste it here. (Remember it will not show as an animated GIF in Word instead it will show as a regular clipart item.)
  1. The principle, Persistence of Vision, allows us to trick our eyes into seeing the individual drawings as if they were moving, but how does this happen? Based on your Internet research and in your own words, what is Persistence of Vision? Explain your answer clearly and completely. Don’t reword and repeat what was just stated, a more detailed explanation is required!

Animation Assignment #2:

You are to create a flipbook. Open the Publisher documentFlipbook Template. Print a hardcopy (printed copy of the document). Notice, there are 12 squares. In each square of your printed copy you will draw a stick figure that will move across the square. After you complete your 12 drawings cut out the squares and staple them into a flipbook.

Congratulations on creating your flipbook! Yes, you created a flipbook, but you also created your first storyboard. In fact, each square represents one frame in your storyboard. Hang on to your flipbook you will use it with Assignment # 3.

Animation Assignment #3:

Before starting the steps below read the Overview.

OVERVIEW:

You are about to enter the world of digital animation. Using CC Animate you will create your first animated sequence. Clickhere to see an example. You will use your flipbook as a storyboard. How do we match our flipbook with CC Animate? When you open CC Animate you will see taking up the most space a white rectangle. This is the stage. The stage represents one square of your flipbook. You will draw your stick figure onto the stage positioned like square 1 of your flipbook. Now you’re thinking, “But I have 12 squares!” With CC Animate we will take a snapshot of our rectangle each time before we make a change, which represents a different square of your flipbook. We take each snapshot by Inserting a Keyframe (from the menu bar: Insert, Keyframe). Notice the timeline above our stage. It moved to the right one frame and it placed a black dot in the frame to let us know it’s a Keyframe. After inserting a Keyframe we will change our stick figure to look like the next square in our flipbook. We make our changes by deleting with the Eraser those parts we don’t want and drawing on the new parts. Next we click the black Selection Arrow in our Tools. With the black selection arrow we select our stick figure by dragging a box that encloses all of our stick figure. Then with the arrow keys on our keyboard or by the use of the mouse we move the stick figure to a position that matches the corresponding square in our flipbook. We Insert a Keyframe and we repeat the process. After creating the 12 Keyframes, which represents your flipbook, you need to Save your CC Animate animation on your H drive. Name your animation CC Animate Flipbook XX (replace the XX with your computer workstation number). Next we will export your CC Animate animation as an animated GIF document. From the menu bar: File, Export Movie. Save in your H drive. For the File name of your document use StickfigureXX (replace the XX with your computer workstation number). Save as type Animated GIF (*.gif) then Save.

Here are the steps to create your first CC Animate animation:

  • Step 1: Open CC Animate. Make sure you have a clear screen, (if necessary – File, New). When you open CC Animate you will see taking up the most space a white rectangle. This is the stage. The stage represents one square of your flipbook.
  • Step 2: Draw your stick figure onto the stage positioned like square 1 of your flipbook. Now you’re thinking, “But I have 12 squares!” With CC Animate we will take a snapshot of our rectangle each time before we make a change, which represents a different square of your flipbook.
  • Step 3: From the menu bar: Insert, Keyframe. After inserting a Keyframe we will change our stick figure to look like the next square in our flipbook. Notice the timeline above our stage. It moved to the right one frame and it placed a black dot in the frame to let us know it’s a Keyframe.
  • Step 4: Make changes to your stick figure by deleting with the Eraser those parts we don’t want and drawing on the new parts.
  • Step 5: Click the black Selection Arrow in the Tools panel. With the black selection arrow we select our stick figure by dragging a box that encloses all of our stick figure.
  • Step 6: With the arrow keys on our keyboard or by the use of the mouse we move the stick figure to a position that matches the next square in our flipbook.
  • Step 7: Insert a Keyframe and we repeat the process starting with Step 4 until we have 12 keyframes.
  • Step 8: Save your CC Animate animation on your H drive and name your animation CC Animate Flipbook XX (replace the XX with your computer workstation number).
  • Step 9: From the menu bar: File, Export Movie. Save in your H drive. For the File name of your document use StickfigureXX (replace the XX with your computer workstation number). Save as type Animated GIF (*.gif) then SAVE.

Animation Assignment #4:

Create an animated dog. Click here to see an example. For helpful hints on how to create a good dog animation click HERE.

Include the following:

  1. Wagging tail
  2. Walking & moving legs
  3. Stops & Sits down
  4. Gets up and continues walking
  5. Jumps onto a simple platform (front legs)
  6. Completely stands on the platform (all four legs)
  7. Sits down
  8. Add your name. Have it enter from the top left, move across the stage, and exit on the right as your dog sits down in item 7. Consider adding this on a separate layer.

Save your animation as a CC Animate document and as an Animated GIF. Be sure to place both documents in your H drive.

Animation Assignment #5:

Create your own imaginative animation. Show and demonstrate your technical skills with all the CC Animate tools as you create an animation of your own design. Click here to seean example.

Do’s / Don’ts
Make it humorous / No blood & guts, no spewing
Add details & make your animation more expressive / No violence, no loping heads, no missing limbs
Include more keyframes to have a smoother (more fluid) animation / No jumpy animation, unless it’s intentional and a small part of the overall animation
Appropriate for high school / No bathroom humor
Animation at least 5 seconds (min. 60 keyframes playing at 12/fps frames per second) / No stick figures. (try to be more creative in the use of ALL tools)
Use ALL skills learned / Don’t just use old stick figure skills. (see the example above)
Add new layers with background images that develop your story

Animation Assignment #6:

Analysis and Reflection Essay – Complete the following prompts in a Word document essay using the MLA format. Your research from #1 above will be used for the works cited.

You have just completed the animation module. In a 1 1/2pageessayreflect upon what you have learned about CC Animate. What skills have you gained or improved upon. Which skills were the most challenging? Why? Which were the least challenging? Why? Be specific in your response and you’ll have to be concise to keep it down to 1 1/2 pages.

The zoetrope research you did in #1 above will be your Works Cited.
