Muncy High School Mrs. Baker

A.P. United States History 2015 Summer Assignment

Advanced Placement U.S. History – June, 2015

Course Overview: For Students & Parents

Welcome to AP US History! I look forward to seeing you next fall and embarking on an exciting and in depth exploration of the history of our country. To prepare for this journey, we need you to begin reading the AP US History text. We have approximately 33 weeks during the school year to cover 40 chapters of the text. Covering some of the text over the summer allows us time to focus on specific issues during the school year. Additionally, this will allow our class some much needed review time for the AP test in May.

In order to adequately prepare for class this fall, there are Three parts to this Summer Assignment that MUST be submitted to room 154 BEFORE 12:00 PM on Wednesday August 19th . (Only those with extenuating circumstances can submit their assignments to - with the understanding that I am not responsible for any computer or ISP related problems.)

Please note: Failure to hand in these assignments on the date due will cause you to be scheduled into a American Cultures II class for the 2015-2016 year.

SUMMER ASSIGNMENT

Due: Wednesday AUGUST 19, 2015 BEFORE 12:00 PM

Part I: Textbook Reading & Outline Assignments

At this course level, you are expected to determine what is most/least important in assigned readings. There is so much material to cover between September and April (when we begin reviewing for the AP Exam) that we simply cannot discuss every trend and event. Consequently, YOU are responsible for reading and comprehending this college level material largely on your own.

Naturally, we will discuss anything you do not understand, but you must take notes on each chapter – and submit such during the period due. These notes will count for a considerable portion of your grade. By April you will have read the entire book and should possess outlined notes for each chapter. Careful reading, good notes and consistent study are vital to success in this course.

a.  Complete study guides while reading Pageant Chapters 1, 40 & 41; AMSCO chapters 1, 30 & 31.

b.  Complete the multiple choice questions at the end of each chapter of AMSCO.

c.  Be prepared for a Quiz on readings the second week of school.

d.  Read and answer the questions on articles by H. Zinn and L. Schweikart.

Please read and sign below: I understand that AP US History is designed to prepare me to take the AP Exam in May. In order to cover all the required course material, summer assignments are given to students to prepare them for the course. I understand that the assignments will be graded and must be turned in on the assigned date.
