Guidance on Research Proposal:
Allapplicants forPhDstudentshipsattheScottish GraduateSchoolof SocialSciencearerequiredtosubmitaresearch proposal. Theresearchproposalisan essentialcomponentoftheapplication.Onceyou havecompletedtheresearch proposalpleaseupload it,aspart of yourapplication,totheScottishGraduateSchool’sOnlinePortal.
Theresearch proposalmustbea detailed descriptionof theintended research topic.Itwillformthebasisforassessingtheapplication.Theproposalshould bewritten ina clearand concisemanner.The main body oftheresearch proposal(excluding thebibliography)mustnotexceed1500 words.Pleasenotethattheboxbelowislockedat10,000characters.
TheResearchProposalshould includethefollowing sections:
  • Overview–a generalintroduction to yourresearch topic,which should includetheresearch question/sto beaddressed and theoverallaimof theproject.
  • Context–situatetheresearch within therelevantliterature/s.Thisshould includea briefsummary of research alreadytaken in thefield,addressing key worksand scholars. Specificattention should bepaid toproblemsin theexisting literatureandways in whichyour proposed researchchallenges/addressestheseproblems.You should also giveanaccountofthetheoreticalissuesrelevantto your research,and whetheryouintendtotestexisting theoriesor develop newones.
  • Methodology –providea detailed accountofthemethodologyand/ormethodsthatwillbeused.Specificattentionshould bepaid,whererelevant,to anyinnovativeaspectsoftheproposedmethodology.
  • Impact–a briefdiscussionof theimplicationsoftheproposed research forthebroaderdiscipline,anypracticalapplications,and/oranypolicyrelevance.
