Fee Assessment

Fee rates for programmes provided at GMIT are set out in the Fee Schedule for any given academic year.

All eligible third level students admitted to GMIT will be assessed for fees in accordance with the

  • Third Level Trainee Scheme - Level 6 & 7 Programmes – (Appendix II) or the
  • Free Tuition (Free Fees Initiative) - (Appendix II)

Fee paying students will be assed at either the

  • EU Fee Rate - (Appendix III)or the
  • Non-EU – (Appendix IV)

Fee Liability

Please note students wishing to attend GMIT are obliged to register and pay any fee liability before commencingtheir programme. Any student who is waiting on a grant and anyone who wishes to pay their fees by instalment or special payment plan should contact .

Where a student is not successful in a grant application then they are liable to the institute for any unpaid fees. Students who have a recognised sponsor will be liable for any unpaid fees if the sponsor defaults on payment.

Temporary Registration

Students who temporarily register online are liable for fees as per the current years fee schedule. Where a student leaves the institute they must follow the procedures outlined on Page 4. A financial implication of a student leaving is dependent on the timing as detailed below:

Students leave before the 31st of October– no fee liable

Students leave between 1st of November and the 31st of January– student liable for full student contribution and half tuition fees (where a student qualifies under the Free Fee Initiative half the tuition will be claimed on their behalf).

Students leave after the 31st of January– student liable for full student contribution and full tuition fees (where a student qualifies under the Free Fee Initiative the tuition fee will be claimed on their behalf).

Students who leave the institute and plan to return with fees outstanding must clear any fee liability before they will be allowed register or progress with their studies. Any unpaid fees at the time of leaving will be pursued by the Institute.

Students who fail to Register

After accepting an offer of place of a programme at GMIT, students must complete registration and pay any outstanding fees.

Failure to register will result in the student not having access to the library or IT facilities.

Students who fail to register are not allowed attend class and should they sit any Institute examinations / assessments they will not receive official notification of their results until their registration status is resolved.

Students, who fail to complete registration, and fail to pay any outstanding fees, will not be allowed to progress to the next stage of their programme, or to graduate from the Institute.

Material Fees

Students undertaking particular programmes of study will be charged a material fee. Material fees are not covered by a grant authority. A list of programmes where a Material fee applies is included in the Fee Schedule.

Students taking an Additional Elective Module

A student who wishes to take an additional module must submit a completed form signed by the Head of Department. This form is available from the school office/GMIT website.
Full time students taking extra credits up to the maximum of 5 credits (or 10 extra credits if a language module) will have no additional fee applied. In exceptional circumstances, where a student is approved to take in excess of 5 optional extra credits (or 10 optional extra language credits) the student will be charged for those credits based on the number of credits and the level of the programme.

Students approved to Progress and Carry failed Modules

In exceptional circumstances, students are approved to progress carrying one or more failed modules. Fees for such modules will be the same as the repeat fee (see current years Fee Schedule for detail).

Refund policy

All financial obligations to the Institute must be paid in full before a refund is made. Refund cheques issued to students are reduced by any amount the student owes to the Institute.

No refund will be made to a student where a fee remains outstanding. Unpaid fees at the time of leaving will be carried forward and added to the fee liability for the next academic year. Any unpaid fees at the time of withdrawal will be pursued by the Institute.

Students who have fees outstanding from the year of interrupt studies/deferral will not be Invited to or permitted to register in the next academic year.

A refund of tuition fees and/or student contribution may be made in the following circumstances:

  1. Where a student accepts a higher offer through the CAO.
  2. Where a student pays their student contribution fee and are subsequently awarded a third level maintenance grant.
  3. Where a student officially withdraws/interrupt studies/defers from the institute (See below for detail).
  4. Where a repeating student changes from repeat and attending to repeat exam only.

Withdrawal/Interrupt Studies/Defers

A student wishing to leave should submit a Withdrawal/Interrupt Studies/Defer Form signed by the Head of Department to withdraw/interrupt studies/defer from the institute. The date in which a student leaves determines the amount of the refund. The date of leaving must be stated on the form.

Students who commence in September

Students who leave before the 31stof October
The student contribution is only refundable where a student withdraws on or before the 31st of October. No fees will be claimed for students who leave before the 31st of October.

Students who leave 1st of November and 31st of January
A refund of 50% of the tuition fee will be made where a student leaves the institute between 1st of November and the 31st of January. For students who qualify under the free fees initiative half of the tuition will be claimed on their behalf.

Students who leave after the 31st of January
No refund will be paid to a student who leaves the institute after the 31st of January. For students who qualify under the free fees initiative full tuition will be claimed on their behalf.

Fee implications for students returning to college after interrupting Study

Interrupted (Defer) before the 31st of October– Student liable for full tuition and full student contribution. For students that qualify under the Free Fees Initiative the tuition fee will be claimed on their behalf.

Interrupted between the 31st of October and the 31st of January– Students liable for tuition and student contribution on a per credit basis. The relevant full time fee is adjusted pro-rata and students are charged on a per credit basis. This fee should not exceed the full tuition plus student contribution charge for the programme.

For students that qualify under the Free Fees Initiative half the tuition fee can be claimed in the year they return.

Interruptedafter the 31st of January– students liable for tuition and student contribution on a per credit bases. The relevant full time fee is adjusted pro-rata and students are charged on a per credit basis. This fee should not exceed the full tuition plus student contribution charge for the programme.

Students who commence in January

Students who leave before the 1stof March
The student contribution only is refundable where a student leaves on or before the 1st of March. No fees will be claimed for students who leave before the 1st of March.

Students who leave between 2nd of March and the 31st of May
A refund of 50% of the tuition fee will be made where a student leaves the institute between 2nd of March and the 30th of June. For students who qualify under the free fees initiative half of the tuition will be claimed on their behalf.

Students who leave after the 31st of May

No refund will be paid to a student who leaves the institute after the31st of May. For students who qualify under the free fees initiative full tuition will be claimed on their behalf.

Fee implications for students returning to college after interrupting Study

Change of Repeating Mode

Students who wish to change their repeating mode from ‘Repeat Attending’ to ‘Repeat Exam Only’ should submit a ‘Change of Repeating Mode’ form signed by the Head of Department or Head of School, by the following dates:

  • Year Long Module(s) – Before 31st of October
  • Semester 1 Module(s) – Before 31st of October
  • Semester 2 Module(s) – Before 1st of March

The form is available from the Schools Office/GMIT website.

Students will be refunded accordingly.

Repeating

  • Where a student leaves before the 31st of October they will be refunded fees paid as per the Fee Refund Policy.
  • Where a student submits an application to repeat by exam-only a liability is accrued. In the event that a student does not repeat the module(s) the liability stands and where a fee is paid it is non-refundable.
  • A student granted an exam defer is eligible to register as exam-only for the next available exam session, without incurring a fee. Where a student elects to or is required to repeat and attend then the corresponding attending fees will apply.
  • All Repeat Attending students are liable for fees. The relevant full time fee is adjusted pro-rata and students are charged on a per credit basis. A fee for a repeating studentshould not exceed the full tuition plus student contribution charge for the programme.
  • Students who are admitted through Springboard are liable for repeat fees.
  • Where a placement is repeated the appropriate repeat attending fee applies. There is no exam only repeat facility for a student repeating a placement module. If a student registers but does not take the place then they must complete a defer/interrupted study form.

ACCA (Assoication of Charted Certified Accountants)

Full time students take two modules in semester 1 and three in semester 2.

A student who leaves in the second semester (before the 31st of January) will receive a refund of the 2nd semester fees and will be charged per module on their return (as per year of return fee schedule).

International Fees

International students are liable for the Non-EU fee rate except where they qualify for either the
Free Fees Initiative or the EU rate of fee.

Deceased Students

Where a deceased student has a fee liability this liability will be cleared. Where a deceased student has paid fees a refund of any fees paid will be refunded to the next of kin.

Deposits

Alldeposits paid to the Institute are non-refundable unless stated otherwise. Depositspaid will be credited towards the students’ fees on commencement of their programme.

Correction of Fees

The Institute reserves the right to correct the fee charged to a student in the event that an incorrect fee is charged in error where, incorrect information is given at enrolment/registration or where a change arises in student circumstances that affects the fee due.

APPENDIX I - THIRD LEVEL TRAINEE SCHEME-LEVEL 6 & 7 PROGRAMMES

Tuition fees will be paid in respect of all full-time students on Higher Cert and Ordinary Degrees who have no previous Third Level and subject to the following conditions:

On full-time level 6/7 programmes, there is no residency requirement attached to qualify for free fees under the Third Level Trainee Scheme. However students must meet the following nationality requirements to qualify for free fees under the Scheme.

  1. Students must be a national of an EU Member State/EEA country or Swiss Confederation OR
  1. Persons who have official refugee status in this State. Time spent from date of official lodgement of application papers for refugee status will be included for the purpose of meeting the three year residency requirement.
  1. Family members of a refugee who are granted permission by the Minister for Justice and Equality to enter and reside in Ireland under Section 18 of the Refugee Act, 1996.
  1. Persons who have permission to remain in the State as a family member of a Union citizen under the provisions of the European Communities Regulations 2006 and 2008 and Directive 2004/38/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council.
  1. Persons who have been granted Humanitarian Leave to remain in the Stateor be a person in respect of whom the Minister for Justice and Law Reform has granted permission to remain following a determination not to make a deportation order under Section 3 of the Immigration Act 1999.

Documentation Required

Please note in relation to the categories above, the following documentation is required to prove nationality eligibility under the Third Level Trainee Scheme for free fees:

  1. Irish Birth Certificate or European Union Passport.
  2. Original letter from the Minister for Justice and Law Reform declaring that the person is a refugee under Section 17 of the Refugee Act, 1996.
  3. Original letter from the Minister for Justice and Law Reform confirming the family member status of the refugee under Section 18 of the Refugee Act, 1996. A GNIB Registration Card must also be produced.
  4. Original family member’s letter from the Minister for Justice and Law Reform, a copy of their passport and their GNIB Registration Card bearing the title “4EUFAM”. Please note a Stamp 4 is not sufficient for a student to qualify for free tuition fees.
  5. Original letter from the Department of Justice and Law Reform stating either that the person has humanitarian leave to remain in the State or permission to remain in the State following a determination not to make a deportation order. They must also produce a copy of their passport and a GNIB Registration card.
  6. Certificates of Naturalisation, for the purpose of determining eligibility for Free Fees, a Certificate of Naturalisation must be accompanied by another form of formal identification, preferably one with photographic identification eg passport or driving licence, where a student does not have a passport or driving licence, original letters issued to them from the Department of Justice confirming their status are acceptable.
  7. If a parent has received Irish citizenship under Certificate of Naturalisation and the child still held Non-EU citizenship then they would come under the category ‘Persons who have been granted permission to remain in the State as a family member of an Union citizen”. This is covered under the Appendix 1.3 of the criteria for the Free Fees Scheme.
  8. If the child’s residency category is ‘permission to remain’ and their Parent’s hold a Certificate of Naturalisation then they would be considered for free tuition fees once they meet all other criteria of the scheme and their residency card bears the title Stamp4EUFam.
APPLICANTS TO FAILTE IRELAND PROGRAMMES

Failte Ireland will agree to pay the fees for students on work based learning programmes, this applies only where students are working in tourism based hospitality establishments. (Failte Ireland will not pay for students working in Hospitals, Canteens or Prisons).

Previous Third Level

Please see the following clauses under the TLT Scheme where a student has previous Third Level

  • Students on Accelerated Technician courses approved under the Education/Industry Initiative will receive Free Fees for their programme regardless of whether they have previous Third Level. However students must meet the Free Fees criteria for their tuition fees to be covered.
  • Students will be entitled to free tuition for a Level 6/7 programme if they have no more than 1 year done on a previous programme.
  • Students who have completed a two-year Level 6 programme are not eligible for free tuition in respect of a further two year Level 6 or three-year Level 7 programme, but they may be admitted to the third “add-on” year of a related Level 7 programme.
  • Tuition fees will not be paid for students undertaking a repeat year of study or for students who already hold a degree.
