Project title: / Student Charters: Are they keeping pace with current trends in studentdishonesty in assessment?
Project duration: / 10 weeks from late November to mid-February minimum 20 hours per week
Description: / Academic integrity is aserious concern for tertiary institutions. Yet it is known that student dishonesty practices in assessment are increasing in sophistication. Practices range from unintentional plagiarism through to online contract cheating websites providing individualised assessment task responses for paying students. Part of a University’s responseto this is to build a resilient institutional culture of honour around academic integrity andeducating students about ethical decision-making. The Student Charter outlines the rights and responsibilities of students in a range of areas and is an important avenueto support these academic integrity responses.
This project investigates what student charters in Australian universities state about academic integrity,student dishonesty in assessment and whether they are abreast of current trends. It may also pose potential recommendations to support good practice.
Expected outcomes and deliverables: / The summer scholar will:
  • Collect and collate university student charters from a web search
  • Adopt a scholarly method to analyse the relevant data from these student charters
  • Draw conclusions and pose potential recommendations from the research
  • Communicate the results of this research to stakeholder groups in a report and/or presentation
