Beautiful publicity colour specimens in two booklets, one giving shades of red, the other blue, green and yellow. The hues are very subtle and are presented in an attractive, well designed hard cover folder.

Percy Cane was one of the leading garden architects of his day. This work gives a very good overview of his design philosophy. Uncommon, especially in dust wrapper.

A very interesting survey. Naturally there is an emphasis on the post-war Socialist achievements, but there is also a good deal on Czech nationalist sources and the early modernist are quite well featured: Kotera, Gocar, Krejcar etc. [Texts in 6 languages, including Czech and English]

Nicely produced work on the artist’s surrealist jewels. Each plate has a quote from Dali on the facing page. If only I had the money.

Beautifully produced study, prepared by Erickson himself. 14pp plans and sections. Wonderful photos emphasising the way in which his projects fit with the landscape, which, being Canadian, includes huge sweeping vistas. Some take your breath away. Very imaginative and modernist use of the local materials, especially wood. The most ambitious work on the architect up to this date.

Designing Italian Liners

A very significant pre-war Italian, work, describing interior designs for five Italian liners, as well as six office buildings and apartments, including the Trieste stock exchange and the Italian tourist office in London. Gustavo Finali (1887-1967) was a notable Italian architect and designer born in Trieste. He was especially well known for his sumptuous cruise ship interiors, the most famous of which was perhaps the motorship 'Vittoria', which is presented in detail in this book. Finali also designed the interiors of warships, hotels, offices, cafes etc.

Monograph on the life and work of Sir Edmund Happold (1930-1996). He was head of the School of Architecture and Building Engineering at Bath. His firm, Buro Happold, Consulting Engineers, were involved in the design of the Pompidou Centre and buildings in the Middle East, Hong Kong, Munich etc. He worked extensively with Ove Arup, Trevor Dannat, Otto Frei. The scarcer original Happold Trust edition in hardback.

Most of this fine book is high-quality images of Siemens' structures, particularly outside Berlin: company works, the Siemensstadt model village for workers, the great Schaltwerk-Hochhaus etc. Many of these were designed by Hertlein (1881-1963). He had been hired by Siemens and Halske in 1912 and became their chief architect, with overall control of construction. A superb book with very powerful images.

A splendid survey of then recent hospital architecture; many of these buildings are in the Modern Movement style. Most examples are from Germany, with some from other countries. Beautifully produced book, printed on art paper.
Swedish Social Housing

Essentially a photographic record of the work of this Swedish housing association. Each image is accompanied by long captions, some also with plans. Much of their work is in the modernist style and the Association contributed a great deal to Swedish functionalism. The fine photos images are by Andreas Feininger. Some of the images show life in these settlements. It looks quite idyllic.

An attractive pattern book of 36 designs of bungalows and houses, each with an exterior drawing and plan, estimated costs of building in wood or brick. Two pages of interior designs. All are detached houses, some quite elaborate. Unusual to find in a dust wrapper.
Glass in the Modern Movement

First edition of this famous work on the uses of glass in modernist buildings. Architects featured include Breuer, Le Corbusier, Gropius, Mies, Sartoris etc. Arthur Korn (b Breslau, 1891-1978) was an important figure in the international modern movement. He was a member of CIAM, the MARS group etc. He emigrated to Britain in 1937, not returning to Europe until just before his death. A fine survey, more international than German in focus and a lovely piece of 1920s mise-en-page. All the examples are by named architects.

An informative, beautifully produced monograph on this legendary architect. Kotera deserves to be better known outside his native land. Based on a major exhibition at Obecni Dum (Municipal House), Prague.
Le Corbusier – two classic works

Generally a good copy of a book more often than not in poor condition - if found at all. £650.00
Original edition of this seminal work, comprehensively illustrated. Le Corbusier presents his ideal rational city, with its separation of functions, and applies these concepts to existing cities including Moscow, Paris, Algiers etc. This copy has a small neat owner stamp on title: "Architect Sam Barkai. Tel Aviv". Barkai was an important modernist architect in Tel-Aviv and much influenced by Le Corbusier.

A survey of the architect's many projects and plan for Paris. The chronology is reversed. Beautifully produced book; its layout, illustrations and graphics suggest that it was designed by Le Corbusier himself.
Leaded Lights: a nice trade catalogue

This prize-winning study was the first detailed study of Lescaze's life and work and is still the best account. Lescaze (1896-1969), was born in Switzerland. He studied in his native country and in Germany before moving to the USA in the early 1920s and was a pioneering modernist of great distinction. Excellent monograph including full list of works etc. Now becoming scarce.

The standard work on Lorimer (1864-1929), with a splendid series of high-quality plates and scholarly commentary. Sometimes described as "the Scottish Lutyens", Lorimer designed many country houses, churches and war memorials. He also did a number of garden layouts, including some with Gertrude Jekyll. Scarce.

Thomas Mawson – two key works

One of the better editions of Mawsons’s epic work. It was re-edited with new illustrations added to each chapter. A splendid work, providing a comprehensive survey of the grander designs and principles of the period, including some with urban design implications.

Mawson’s fascinating, and well written, autobiography. He describes his landscape architecture work as well as his involvement with city planning in Britain and Canada, working with William Lever, post-World War I Greek reconstruction, civic art plans for Northern cities etc. Mawson comes across as a highly significant figure, as shown in Janet Waymark's excellent recent biography. A very scarce and desirable work.

Albin Müller (1871-1941), was architect of the Deutschen Theater-Ausstellung, Magdeburg 1927, with its dramatic brick-built tower. He was a part of the Darmstadt artists' colony and designed buildings in the city, for instance the well-known Darmstâdter Löwentor, close in design to the Pferdetor in Magdeburg, also by him. He also created the Magdeburg room at the St Louis World's Fair in 1904. From 1917 he was commonly known as Albinmüller, and was an innovative and remarkable architect who deserves to be better known.
Nairn’s famous polemics

'Outrage' was Nairn's famous and highly-influential polemic against Britain’s creeping "Subtopia". 'Counter-Attack' was its sequel and is more positive, with case studies of good practice. Attractive works, with interesting graphics and layout, very 'period'. Now very scarce, especially as here in good condition.
