These posts are fixed term for a period of 12 months based in Ambulatory Emergency Care in the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, Glasgow which is a large teaching hospital where you will have the opportunity to liaise with other specialties as a generalist seeing a range of medical problems in hot clinics and having access to on-site specialty reviews. You will have the opportunity to develop / maintain practical skills and there will also be formal teaching opportunities, for example the weekly grand rounds.

The Unit is open Monday – Friday from 1000 hrs to 2000hrs. We would welcome the input of new or existing General Practitioner colleagues in covering sessions within this period in the unit, where you will work alongside 13 consultant colleagues and nurse practitioners in the provision of assessment and management of GP referred medical patients.

Successful applicants will join 13 consultants in the provision of assessment and management of GP referred medical patients as well as having close working relations with Hospital Consultants across the Specialties. This is an exciting new development in the south that we are keen to continually develop, improving the experience of patients as they are referred to hospital. We recognise the combined knowledge of primary and secondary care staff will only assist in strengthening the development of the unit.

2. QueenElizabethUniversityHospital, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde

The QueenElizabethUniversityHospital is a new purpose built hospital that opened its doors in May 2015. The hospital has 1109 beds and will provide medical care to a population of around 700,000 people in west and south Glasgow. The hospital will provide the full range of medical and surgical services and many tertiary specialties including neurology, ENT and renal medicine. It will also be one of the 4 hospitals in Scotland to admit major trauma cases from next year.

Development of the new QEUH has allowed inpatient and acute medical care from the Western Infirmary, VictoriaHospital and Southern General to be consolidated to a single site.

The range of services provided by the Department of Medicine includes the sub-specialties of Cardiology, Rheumatology, Respiratory Medicine, Gastro-Enterology, Diabetes, and Endocrinology and Dermatology and a Medical High Dependency Unit. The General Surgical Services include an eight-bed High Dependency Unit and sub-specialties including Vascular, Breast Care, and Colorectal. Medicine for the Elderly Services includes Movement Disorders and Falls Specialties.

The above services are supported by other consultant-based services which incorporate diagnostic and clinical components including Anaesthetics, Laboratory Medicine, and Radiology. There is also available a wide range of therapeutic services which include Audiology, Clinical Psychology, Dietetics, Occupational Therapy, ECG, Physiotherapy, and Speech & Language Therapy.

5. The Ambulatory Emergency Care Unit

This unit is for the management of low acuity patients referred by their GP with medical conditions, with most patients being discharged the same day. Patients managed in the AECbenefit from timely assessment and diagnostics where necessary with the opportunity to refer patients into emergency ‘hot’ clinic slots and Day Ward services as required. Many patients seen in AECwill be managed using protocolised pathways for conditions including Chest pain, cellulitis, and headaches. The post holder will be expected to assist in developing further pathways of care for ambulant patients over time with the aim being to increase the patient flow through the AEC.

Duties of the Post:

This post is based over a year in the first instance. The post will comprise of Direct Clinical Care Sessions per week, which can be negotiated, based primarily in theAEC, QueenElizabethUniversityHospital.The post holder will review and manage low acuity GP referred medical patients and will work closely with and supervise, junior doctors, a group of medical nurse practitioners and on occasion maysupport the adjacent Immediate Assessment Unit. Overall supervision of the AECwill be from a Consultant based in bothAECand IAU.

New Entrants to the NHS will normally commence on the minimum point of the salary scale, (dependent on qualifications and experience). Salary is paid monthly by Bank Credit Transfer.
HOURS OF DUTY / Sessional ( 1 session = 4 hours)
SUPERANNUATION / New entrants to NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde who are aged sixteen but under seventy five will be enrolled automatically into membership of the NHS Pension Scheme. Should you choose to "opt out" arrangements can be made to do this via:
REMOVAL EXPENSES / Assistance with removal and associated expenses may be given and would be discussed and agreed prior to appointment.
