TVA-Tennessee Valley Authority – built 21 government owned dams along the Tennessee River, controlling floods and producing electricity. Some feared the TVA as a form of Socialism.

Civil Rights Act of 1964 - outlawed discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin.

AEF-American Expeditionary Forces - consisted of the United States Armed Forces sent to Europe in World War I led by John J. Pershing.

ERA-Equal Rights Association - its purpose was "to secure Equal Rights to all American citizens, especially the right of suffrage, irrespective of race, color or sex."

CCC-Civilian Conservation Corps - a public work relief program that operated from 1933 to 1942 in the United States for unemployed, unmarried men from relief families, ages 18–25 as part of the New Deal.

Community Reinvestment Act - designed to encourage commercial banks and savings associations to help meet the needs of borrowers in all segments of their communities, including low- and moderate-income neighborhoods.

FDA – The Food and Drug Administration - The FDA is responsible for protecting and promoting public health through the regulation and supervision of food safety, tobacco products, dietary supplements, prescription and over-the-counter pharmaceutical drugs.

SEC- Securities and Exchange Commission - primary responsibility for enforcing the federal securities laws and regulating the securities industry, the nation's stock and options exchanges, and other activities and organizations, including the electronic securities markets in the United States.

GI Bill - provided a range of benefits for returning WWII Veterans. Benefits included low-cost mortgages, low-interest loans to start a business, cash payments of tuition and living expenses to attend college, high school or vocational education, as well as one year of unemployment compensation.

Homestead Act - gave an applicant ownership of land, typically called a "homestead” at little or no cost

Selective Service Act - authorized the federal government to raise a national army for the Americans during war through conscription.

Civil Rights Act of 1957 - The goal of the 1957 Civil Rights Act was to ensure that all Americans could exercise their right to vote.

Executive Order 9066 - authorizing the Secretary of War to prescribe certain areas as military zones. Eventually, EO 9066 cleared the way for the deportation of Japanese Americans to internment camps.

WPA-Works Projects Administration - employing millions of unemployed people (mostly unskilled men) to carry out public works projects, including the construction of public buildings and roads.

NAFTA-North American Free Trade Agreement - is an agreement signed by Canada, Mexico, and the United States, creating a trilateral trade partners in North American.

OPEC-Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries - is an oil cartel whose mission is to coordinate the policies of the oil-producing countries. The goal is to secure a steady income to the member states and to secure supply of oil to consumers.

Voting Rights Act of 1965 - is a landmark piece of federal legislation in the United States that prohibits discrimination in voting.

FDIC-Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation - it provides deposit insurance guaranteeing the safety of a depositor’s accounts in member banks up to $250,000 for each deposit ownership category in each insured bank.

USA Patriot Act - Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required Intercepting and Obstructing Terrorism Act.

NATO-North Atlantic Treaty Organization - The organization constitutes a system of collective defenses whereby its member states agree to mutual defense in response to an attack by any external party.

HUAC-House Committee on Un-American Activities - It was created in 1938 to investigate alleged disloyalty and subversive activities on the part of private citizens, public employees, and those organizations suspected of having Communist ties.

Wagner Act - guarantees basic rights of private sector employees to organize into trade unions, engage in collective bargaining for better terms and conditions at work, and take collective action including strike if necessary.

Interstate Commerce Act - The agency's original purpose was to regulate railroads (and later trucking) to ensure fair rates, to eliminate rate discrimination, and to regulate other aspects of common carriers, including interstate bus lines and telephone companies.

American Recovery and Investment Act – Stimulus package that would save companies and create jobs

GATT-General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade - was a multilateral agreement regulating international trade.

Social Security Act - A law enacted in 1935 to provide aid to retirees, the unemployed, people with disabilities, and families with dependent children.
