A day in the life of a Sackets Harbor Laundress – Hammond Central School’s Library Media Specialist (LMS) and Sackets Harbor docent, Hollie Snyder, will share information about the way of life of a laundress, to help us understand what it was like to be part of the military encampment at Sacket’s Harbor during the War of 1812.
Deportation to Siberia: A Memoir – A compelling presentation by John and Linda Krol on his family’s exile from Poland and their odyssey through the Middle East during World War II, and eventual emigration to America.
Fort Drum: Support Services for Military Families – Fort Drum staff explain how Operation READY and Operation Military Kids support soldiers and their families.
Fort LaPresentation – Join Barb O’Keefe, Jim Reagen, George Cherepon, and Marsha Hough, supporters of rebuilding Ogdensburg’s noted Fort LaPresentation, as they explain its history and importance, and outline their attempt to bring it back as an educational resource and tourist attraction.
Jennifer Roy – This former teacher has written over 30 books for children and young adults. Roy’s middle school novel, Yellow Star, is about her Aunt Sylvia, one of 12 children surviving the Lodz Ghetto during the Holocaust.
Loung Ung – This activist, author, and lecturer is a survivor of the Khmer Rouge. She wrote first about escaping from Cambodia in her award-winning novel, First They Killed My Father, and then about her reunion with a sister left behind, in Lucky Child.
Reading Goes to War in Videostreaming – St. Lawrence-Lewis BOCES Model Schools computer integrationist, Loren Nowak, will share sources of videostreamed educational media content, all related to the topic of the day – Reading Goes to War!
Reading Goes to War in Web 2.0 – St. Lawrence-Lewis BOCES Model Schools computer integrationist, Loren Nowak, will share ideas on using a variety of educationally important social networking tools, all related to the topic of the day.
Reading Goes to War Sharing Session – This two-part program will feature first, a discussion of war as depicted in graphic literature for adolescents and young adults presented by Ogdensburg Middle School’s LMS, Melissa Starks, and second, a discussion, moderated by Canton Hugh C. Williams High School’s LMS, Kelly Wilson, on using these war-related St. Lawrence-Lewis School Library System Coordinated Cooperative Collection Development (CCCD) and Learning Resources Center kits: Gary Paulsen: A Soldier’s Heart (CCCD); Kite Runner (CCCD); Snow Falling on Cedars (CCCD); Loung Ung: First They Killed My Father (LRC).
Veterans Panel Discussion – Sit in as veterans of various United States wars and conflicts discuss the personal impact of leaving home and family to become a soldier during times of national crisis. This session is moderated by Jacie Krause.
Warriors of Color in the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, and Civil War – Northern New York resident and historian, Don Papson, is the mover and shaker behind the North Country Underground Railroad Historical Association, based in Plattsburgh, NY. He’s done extensive historical research on North Country topics and will share the results of some of that research in his presentation on oft forgotten people who fought in America’s early wars -- including African-Americans and Native Americans.
