Self Review Policy - NAG 2
Foxton Beach School Board of Trustees with the Principal and Teaching Staff is required to:
Develop a strategic plan which documents how they are giving effect to the National
Education Guidelines through their policies, plans and programmes, including those for
curriculum assessment and staff professional development.
Maintain an on-going programme of self review in relation to the above policies, plans and
programmes, including evaluation of information on student achievement;
Report to students and their parents on the achievement of individual students, and to the
school’s community on the achievement of students as a whole and of groups including the achievement of Maori students against the plans and targets referred to above.
Foxton Beach School Board of Trustees meets its obligations to NAG 2, by ensuring that the following documentation is developed, implemented andreviewed as part of the Board’s self review process.

BOARD MINUTES
- Accurate Board minutes will be kept of all meetings.
- These will be signed by the chairperson and verified as being correct.
- These minutes will be accessible within the school for public viewing.
CHARTER
- The School Charter will set out the mission, vision, values and goals of the school. It also includes the Strategic Plan and Annual Plan.
- The School Charter will be reviewed as per the Review Cycle.
- The Board will develop an Annual Plan, based on its Strategic Plan, setting out it’s priorities for the year.
- The Board and Principal will develop and implement a 3-4 year Strategic Plan based upon the needs of the school.
- The Board will consult with relevant groups within the school community when determining the contents of the Strategic Plan.
COMMUNICATION
- The Board will hold regular meetings throughout the year.
- Invite community involvement/communication through personal approach or letter.
- Liaise with local kindergarten / playgroup and arrange visits to the school.
- An information booklet about the school is provided for families.
- Encourage participation in Foxton Beach School’s Home and School Committee.
- Organise public meetings on important issues affecting the school.
- Students are encouraged to express their ideas/viewpoints about the school.
- Publish fortnightly newsletters and once a term community newsletter.
DEVELOPMENT OF SCHOOL PROCEDURES
- All procedures and programmes will be in accordance with:
The School Charter
The Education Act 1990 and other relevant legislation
Will be directly related to the National Administration Guidelines of the time
- As part of its governance role the Board will determine what appropriate expected outcomes are for each of the National Administration Guidelines.
- As professional leader of the school the Principal is ultimately responsible for the development and
implementation of the teaching and learning programmes and the school-wide procedures designed to achieve the expected outcomes. Aspects of the development and implementation of curriculum procedures and programmes may and will be delegated to other staff members.
- The Principal will work together with any appropriate sub committees, staff or school community groups to develop, implement and maintain the procedures required to achieve the expected outcomes.
- Where appropriate procedural guidelines and programmes will be designed and implemented in consultation with members of the school community.
- The Principal will be responsible for implementing regular programmes of review for all school procedures and programmes.
- The outcomes of the school’s teaching and learning programmes are to be reported on to the Board.
- The Board will be kept informed of the review processes undertaken and their outcomes.
- All school procedures and programmes must promote the delivery of quality teaching and learning programmes and the achievement of quality learning outcomes.
PARENT HANDBOOK
- The Principal and staff shall be responsible for compiling the Parent Handbook.
- This will be approved by the Board and made available to school families and prospective enrolments.
- The Parent Handbook will be reviewed on a regular basis or earlier if major changes are required.
POLICY MAKING AND REVIEW
- Policy statements should not specify action but provide a framework for decision-making.
- Clear, simple language should be used to write policies, to aid communication. It is recommended that they be written in point form.
- A policy statement should be limited where possible to one or two typed pages to make policies easy to read, easy to write and easy to change.
- Policy formulation should be a shared process within the school community.
- New or revised policy will be considered by the Board sub-committees in the first instance before being submitted to the full Board for approval in draft form.
- Draft Policy approved by the Board will be advertised through the school website as parent have access to all policies and procedures on the school website
- Contentious policy will be considered by the Board in response to parent concern.
- Contentious issues will be addressed by the Board by the formation of a working party including people with stake or expertise in the issues involved.
- School policies should take into account the 'umbrella' policies of the Ministry of Education and Government.
- Once adopted, policies should be dated with the current and review dates.
PUBLIC RELATIONS
- The school is to work in co-operation with the professional media.
- School initiated publications to be used as a vehicle for public relations.
- The school to supply articles and photographs to appropriate media outlets.
- All school publications are to be presented in an acceptable form and circulated as widely as possible.
- School produced newsletters should be an effective public relations document.
- Incidental opportunities to promote the school and its students are to be used to advantage.
REPORTING ON STUDENT PROGRESS
- Reporting to parents will take place in the following ways: interviews, written reports, classroom visits, informal telephone calls, informal notes re praise or areas of concern, discipline contingencies and intervention.
- Goal setting meetings will be offered at the start of each year as an opportunity to meet the new teacher and to set goals for the start of the year.
- A written report will be sent home in July and December for all Year 4 to 8 students. All students will be reported on against the National Standards.
- All parents will be offered a three way conference based on the July report.
- Students will also receive a report after 1, 2 and 3 years at school as well as the 6, 18 and 30 month mid reports. All parents will be offered a three way conference based on these reports.
- Students in the two senior rooms will have e-portfolios which will be shared with parents.
- All other students will have portfolios of work which is evidence of how teachers have reached the Overall Teacher Judgement for each student.
- All reporting will identify positive attitudes and developments, and will identify shortcomings and next steps learning constructively.
- All evaluations must be able to be substantiated by relevant data.
- Reports should be expressed in simple clear language.
REVIEW
- The Board and staff will prepare a schedule setting out the review structures operating within the school.
- The review structure will take into account all spheres of Board and teaching operations.
SCHOOL CONSULTATION
- All draft school policies will be displayed by the Board of Trustees on the school website for community input before being formally adopted.
- The school community is invited to contribute their ideas/suggestions on any aspect of school life through direct or indirect consultation with the Board.
- Community surveys are carried out to ascertain the community’s feeling on school/Board organisation.
- Board members are available to any person wishing to consult them on a school issue.
- Students are consulted where appropriate.
