Nutrition Analysis
This assignment consists of 3 parts. You must complete every part correctly to receive credit. Make sure that you are very thorough in completing the steps.
Part 1: Data Entry
Record everything that you eat in a day. Record all foods, snacks, candy, beverages, including alcohol. Log on to and create a free account. Fill in everything accurately, as it will use your information to create recommendations for you. Go to the foods button, and enter the foods consumed one by one. It’s easiest to start with a search, and then pick the food that most closely matches what you ate. When you have entered all foods and beverages, repeat this process, so that you have a duplicate copy of the food you entered for that day.
Part 2: Analysis
Now you can use the reports button to start your analysis. Leave one copy of your food untouched. When you are finished with this part, you should have one day of food exactly as you ate it, and one day of food that has been edited until it meets nutritional guidelines.
You will use three reports to make your analysis:
Calories Eaten (Breaks down the ration of fats, carbs, protein)
Nutrition (Shows the amount of vitamins and minerals consumed)
Calories Burned vs Eaten (Compares how much you ate to what you need)
These three reports should give you all the info you need to tell you what to change from your original day. If your fat is too high, remove a high fat food from your list. Missing a vitamin?- Add a food that contains it. It’s that simple. Just make sure your list is actually something you think you could do in a day.
Part 3: Write Up
Type 1 page explaining why you made the changes you did. Do not tell me about your menu, or what you felt. I want you to explain the purpose for each change you made. Was it to reduce fat? To add a vitamin? To lower sugar intake? Just be specific.
On the due date, you will turn in SEVEN pages. Print out the three reports from your day that ate the food. Print out the three reports from the new and improved version of that day. (You do not need to have actually eaten that food.) Print out the one page you typed for 3 for a total of seven pages. You may also find a helpful resource.
Debate Assignment
For this assignment, you will be divided into groups. You will choose topics to debate, as long as they are health-related in terms of one of the dimensions of health, and they must be controversial enough to have strong pro and con view. In lieu of writing a paper, your job will be to research your topic, and be prepared to argue its merits in class, using your research to back up your viewpoint. Once you have a topic, I will choose whether you argue for or against it, so you may argue something for the assignment that you personally disagree with.
The format of the debate will be as follows:
Opening arguments (3-4 minutes for each side, uninterrupted)
Rebuttal(3-4 minutes for each side, uninterrupted)
Open debate(varies)
Closing arguments(2 minutes, uninterrupted)
Within your group, you will receive your own separate grade. You will not receive a blanket grade for the group. You may divide the workload however you wish, however all members must contribute to the presentation. If you don’t participate verbally in the debate, you can’t score very well. Conversely, hogging the conversation isn’t great either. A well organized group that comes off very professional in their presentation helps everybody’s score. Anything you do visually to enhance your presentation helps the presentation part of your score.

Public Service Announcements
For this project, you are required to produce a series of public service announcements on the topic of your choice, as long as it is health-related. Examples of good topics would be anything along the lines of:
Smoking
Alcohol
Drug Abuse
Violence
Contraception
Teenage Pregnancy
Abstinence
Nutrition/Obesity
Your choices are not limited to this list. However, if you choose something else, consult with me first to make sure that the topic is appropriate for the assignment. I would hate for you to do a bunch of work and then find out the topic is no good.
For this assignment, you will prepare:
1)A pamphlet (use a trifold format)
a)This will contain relevant research and statistical information that is essential to your topic. (Ex. For a disease, you might discuss how you get it, how to prevent it, what are the symptoms, where to go if you think you have it, and how to treat it.)
2)Two different ideas for billboard style ads
a)On a billboard, the idea has to simple. Complicated doesn’t work here, because you’ll drive right by it. You may either present an actual image, or load a computer image and project it.
3)A radio commercial
a)This should last around thirty seconds. You may either present an actual recording, or perform the script in class.
4)Extra credit option: do a video commercial instead of radio
a)You should be prepared with equipment in order to play your video in class.
You are required to do options 1, 2, and 3. You may substitute option 4 instead of 3 for extra credit. These will be presented in front of the class.
