What does it mean to be Irish in Britain?

This is a powerfulquestionthat willdraw manydifferentanswers,stories andopinionsdepending onwhoyou ask: from themigrantthatarrived inthe 50sand 60sto the secondgenerationpersonmilesawayfrom‘home’orthe Irish individualarrivinginBritain todayaboutto embarkon theirownjourney.Butwhatunitesusall isour pride in being Irish;theconnectionto‘home’ and theevolvingnotionofwhatit meanstobeIrishin Britaintoday.

Our organisationwas thefirsttocreatea nationalbodythatbroughttogetherthesemanyvoices–toshareexpertise,lobby,campaignandsupportthegrowthoftheinfrastructureofour community.Thisofferstandstoday.Theclubs,groups andsocieties thatmakeupourmembership play anintegral part in bringing ‘Irish inBritain’tolife.Wewantyou tobe partof this.

Organisationsthat notprimarily orexclusivelyworking with theIrishcommunitybutdeliverservicesto,orworkwith, theIrishcommunitycan join asAssociateMembersandwewelcometheirapplication.

TypesofCommunityMembership

CommunitymembershipisfororganisationsthatexistfortheIrishcommunity–whetherthatisnetworks,clubsand centres,welfareservices,culturalactivity,sportand heritage organisations.

IrishinBritainwelcomesmembershipfromIrishorganisationsinBritainwhoseaimsandobjectivesarein linewith thoseofour charity.

We recognise that there are many smaller groups with limited financial resources and aconcessionaryMembershipfeeof£20 isavailable as setout below.

WealsorecognisethatwhilstumbrellabodiessuchasGAAor ComhaltasCeoltóiríÉireannarerepresentedasamainCommunityMemberwithvotingrights,theirownMembersmaywanttojointheIrishinBritain’snetworkdirectly.TosupportthisAssociateMembershipwithaccesstoaselectionof thebenefitsisavailableforthesegroups.

AssociateMembershipisalsofororganisationsthatarenotprimarilyIrishorworkingexclusivelywith theIrish butwhereelementsof theirworksupportorengagewith theIrishcommunity.
