Below is a brief overview of the speech/language support program for your information. Speech/language therapy focuses on articulation skills, expressive and receptive language skills, pragmatic (social) language skills, fluency/stuttering, and grammar/syntax skills, depending on the needs of the student.

If your child is already receiving services:

·  At some point throughout the year, we will be meeting to update your child’s IEP.

o  I will be in contact with you closer to the renewal date to set up a time and to discuss your child’s progress.

·  Therapy follows the goals outlined in the IEP. Therapy activities are functional, curriculum based, when possible, and enjoyable for your child.

·  A Homework Folder:

o  Designed for carryover and maintenance of your child’s speech and language skills to all different environments

o  After most sessions your child will be assigned a short homework assignment designed to practice what we worked on in speech that day.

o  Homework is reviewed at the beginning of the speech session, but please initial the homework logs to ensure homework completion and allow for another means of communication between us.

·  “Speech Stars” reward system:

o  Your child will earn a “speech star” for completing the homework with your initials on the homework log

o  After completing the chart found inside the speech folder, your child will get to choose a reward.

·  Parent participation is encouraged an appreciated.

o  As a team, we can improve and enhance your child’s speech and language development.

o  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

If you have questions regarding your child’s speech and language development:

Talking to me or your child’s classroom teacher is how the referral process for speech/language support services begin. Your child’s classroom teacher will complete a referral form and then I will complete a speech and language screening. I will contact you with the results and we can discuss the next steps. Recommendations may include informal therapy for a short time period, more formal testing, and suggestions for parents and teachers. My contact information is below if you have any more questions or concerns. You can also find more information regarding the speech/language support program at LES, monthly topics, and suggestions to promote speech and language skills on my website located on the LES homepage under “Programs” and “Special Education.”
