Emigration is the record created for the departure or leaving from a place or residence to live elsewhere.
Immigration
Immigration is the record created for the arrival in a new place intended as a permanent residence.
Primary Documentation
Documentation created at the time of the event for the event being documented.
Secondary Documentation
Documentation used to document an event other than the event for which it was created.

Generally, you must find the place of origin in the new place of residence. Search every record possible on your immigrant, siblings and children. Try to pinpoint the possible date of immigration as close as possible.

Many of these records no longer exist or are very difficult to read. Ship passenger lists are especially tedious for the value of the information obtained. However, sometimes you get lucky.
