News from the Reading Room November 10, 2017
Greetings!
Please join us for Family Reading Night at Chebanse Elementary on Thursday, from 5-7 pm on November 16, 2017. Papa John’s Pizza truck will be available for dinner (lg. 1 topping-$9.00, 8” mega cookie-$5.00, and 5 pc. breadsticks-$3.00). Wear your pajamas, pick your favorite 4th grade book banner, swap a book, and sit back and be entertained by Scott Oberman, magician, ventriloquist, musician, and storyteller. Mr. Oberman’s program will begin at 5:45. We sure hope to see you at this fun and exciting family event.
Following are the Illinois State Standards and activities each grade worked on throughout the week.
Kindergarten: RF.k.1d Recognize and name all upper-and lowercase letters of the alphabet. RF.K2d Isolate and pronounce the initial, medial, and final sounds in three-phoneme words.RF.K.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.
Students continued to practice identifying and associating sounds forall of the letters in the alphabet. Students used a computer program to introduce them to syllabication. In a small group, they practiced counting and identifying the number of syllables in words by clapping their hands. They listened to the story, Guess How Much I Love You, and identified the number of syllables a word had when I gave them one from the story. Finally, each student “hopped” the number of syllables a word had through “grassy spots” in the classroom. Title 1 Reading Progress Reports will be included in your student’s report card. If your student needs more practice on identifying letters and sounds, using the flashcards I sent home in October will greatly help. Please let me know if you are in need of another set.
First Grade:RF.1.1 Demonstrate understanding of the organization and basic features of print. RF1.2 Demonstrate understanding of spoken words, syllables, and sounds (phonemes). RF.1.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words. RF.1.4 Read with accuracy and fluency tosupport comprehension.RL.1. Ask and answer questions about key details in a text.
Students practiced using decoding skills andincreasing vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension skills as we practiced reading the script, The Ring.These were sent home today. I hope you and your family will enjoy rereading it.. Please ask your student to read/sing Lost and Foundwith you! I would also like to suggest designating a shoebox or some other container to store all the books your student will be bringing home from Title1 Reading this year. It will make a great library of books for your student to reread and enjoy Students continued to use Orton Gillingham based activities to practice reading and applying consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) words.
Second Grade:RF.2.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.RF.2.4 Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension.
Students reviewed the r-control vowel teams. They practiced their decoding skills and increasing their vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension skills by reading the nonfiction article, Fly Our Flag for Veterans Day. I hope you and your student will take the time to enjoy rereading it together.Students continued to improve language and literacy skills while building and developing memory, attention, processing speed, and sequencing using the computer program, Fast ForWord.
