COURSE AIMS

The course aims at providing the theoretical and methodological tools necessary to describe the lexico-grammatical and phonological aspects of contemporary English as well as practical guidance on how to use them appropriately in spoken and written communication. Special attention will be dedicated to the textual and rhetorical techniques that characterize discourse genres such as articles, newsletters, internet writing, creative writing.

– Varieties of English: register, genre and dialect.

– Discourse, text, context and culture.

– Cohesion and coherence; theme and rheme.

– Semantic and pragmatic features of English lexicogrammar.

– Lexicography and types of dictionaries.

– Aspects of segmental and suprasegmental phonology.

TEACHING METHOD

Lectures and practical classes.

ASSESSMENT METHOD

Continuous assessment and final oral exam.

The continuous assessment consists of written tests to be taken at the end of each of the three modules that make up the course, comprising a set of 30 multiple choice and true/false questions.

The oral exam is based on the reading list of the course. Students will be assessed on their ability to discuss the contents of the course accurately, fluently and critically.

The course is taught in English.
