Dear Parents:
I wanted to give you an overview of our Horseshoe Volleyball Club to answer many of your questions.
The Horseshoe Volleyball Club is a club open to all volleyball players. Last year, we fielded 11 teams and had 21 school districts represented.
Consideration for our Horseshoe Volleyball Club teams starts with tryouts in November. Our HVC coaches will run players through a two hour practice. Then the coaching staff will create teams based on talent level. We will field as many competitive teams as we can. Registration for the tryouts can be found on
We have two types of teams in our club.
Travel team: This team travels to 9 to 10 tournaments. Most tournaments are two to three day tournaments and can be held anywhere from Washington DC to Lancaster to Pittsburgh. Practices are mandatory on Sunday and during a weekday. These practices are held at Joshua House in Tyrone. This travel team is designed to give players maximum exposure to the highest level of competition. This team is designed to help players considering playing volleyball in college. Travel teams have a head coach and an assistant coach. Your fee of $1,300 covers tournament fees, rental fees for practice, coaching salaries and uniforms. The cost of one of these travel tournaments costs anywhere from $425 to $1,000. In addition to the HVC fee, you will hotel fees (many tournaments are stay-to-play and require our parents, players to stay at certain hotels), travel to and from tournaments and food). The season starts in early December and ends the middle of April.
Regional teams: This team travels to five tournaments within two hours of Altoona. These teams play at West Shamokin, West Branch, Derry, Somerset, Pittsburgh, St. Francis, etc. The mandatory practice is on Sundays at either St. Rose of Lima in Altoona or Joshua House in Tyrone. There will also be a skill development practice during the week at Joshua House in Tryone. The cost of regional team is $375. After the teams are selected many of the teams will decide to travel down East for one or two tournament. If a team would select to play in a two-day tournament in place of one of their five tournaments, the cost would increase $50. For every additional one day tournament add $50 and for every additional two day tournament, add $100. The season starts in early December and ends in March.
Payments:For travel teams, payments are spread over four months (Dec. 1, Jan. 1, Feb. 1 and March 1). A fourth of a payment is due on the first of the month. For regional teams, payments are spread over three months (Dec. 1, Jan. 1 and Feb. 1). Payments can be made on our Horseshoe Volleyball Club Web site with credit card or by mailing checking to Ken Streilein at 102 Skyline Drive, Duncansville, Pa. 16635. Failure to pay on time will result in the player ineligible to play in the next tournament.
Teams: After the tryouts, the coaches will make teams with either 9 or 10 players. It’s up to the coach’s discretion on playing time. And playing time is not discussed with parents. We can tell you up front that it’s not even playing time. After teams are announced, you will receive a commitment letter. You have seven days to commit to the team. Before you commit, you will know who your coach is, teammates are and your tournament schedule.
