Sample Analytical (College Prep) Paragraph

Mildred Taylor uses man vs. society conflicts in The Landin order to reveal how much society’s views effect life in the South. The discrimination towards Paul begins to be felt at home, “…folks came to visit and it was my mama, not my daddy, who ordered me to the kitchen…That was truly the first time I felt unwanted in my daddy’s house” (p. 50). Due to Paul’s lineage, Post Civil War society does not deem it appropriate for him to dine with white people. The reach of society’s taboos into his own home gives Paul the first taste of the discrimination he will feel in the real world and begins to make waves in the family seas. After winning the horse race for Ray Sutcliffe, Paul’s color once again puts him at odds with what is fair, “I’ll pay you when I am ready to pay you… could be tonight, could be next week, could be never… now get!” (p. 117). Ray Sutcliffe’s failure to keep up his end of the deal creates a man vs. man conflict with Paul, however Ray’s behavior and inconsistency is a reflection of society’s view of people of color. This southern society sees Paul and his like as second rate citizens, undeserving of the promises and equal treatment; this discrimination serves to fuel Paul’s determination in life.
