PHILOSOPHY OF SOUTH COFFEYVILLE SCHOOL I-51
School means the space in which students can grow, learn, and become self-reliant individuals. Responsibility for one’s own actions, respect for property, and consideration for others become important learning goals. We strive to teach the basic skills necessary for functioning and achieving in today’s society.
However, we also believe that children, who can share ideas, discuss problems freely, and who experience wholesome release from stress in a relaxed atmosphere will live fuller lives as adults. Self-discipline is important in today’s world, and it must be allowed to begin early in order to fully develop. The school is an extension of the home, but only the beginning of life in a highly structured society. To this end, we strive to achieve our valuable contribution to the students of South Coffeyville School.

THE AMERICAN CREED
“I believe in the United States of America as a government of the people, by the people, for the people, whose just powers are derived from the consent of the governed: a democracy in a republic; a sovereign nation in many sovereign states; a perfect union, one and inseparable, established upon those principles of freedom, equality, justice, and humanity for which American patriots sacrificed their lives and fortunes.
I therefore believe it is my duty to my country to love it; to support its Constitution; to obey its laws; to respect its flag; and to defend it against all enemies.”
William Tyler Page
THE PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE
I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic, for which it stands, one nation, under God, indivisible with liberty and justice for all.

CODE OF
STUDENT CONDUCT
PREFACE
South Coffeyville Schools accepts the challenge of providing a high-quality educational program that prepares the students to compete in modern society. The program provides opportunities for the development of skills, acquisition of knowledge, and formation of desirable attitudes. It also creates an environment that is safe, secure, and conductive to learning. Most students choose to participate in this program. Regrettably, a few students exhibit behavior that prevents the established program from being successful for themselves and others. South Coffeyville Schools accepts the obligation to assist these students with a fair and consistent discipline program that provides opportunities for students to change undesirable behavior while protecting the rights of the majority.
The purpose of these regulations and guidelines is to secure uniform expectations from students in South Coffeyville School. The written code provides the foundation and framework for a fair and sound discipline policy for every student. It also allows sufficient flexibility to meet those special situations encountered.
A document of this nature cannot cover every set of circumstances that may be encountered in the diverse and complex social setting of public schools. Therefore, administrators charged with the responsibility of creating and maintaining a physically safe and appropriate learning environment may find it necessary to use options and procedures not covered in these regulations. South Coffeyville School’s Board policy states that in the absence of Board policy related to a specific situation, the Superintendent, or designee, will use his/her best judgment in arriving at a decision. The decision is based on what he/she senses the policy would be if it existed, based on the spirit and tenor of other existing policies.
The Board of Education is committed to the concept of nondiscrimination in relation to race, color, religion, gender, age national origin, veteran status, or disability. This policy will prevail in all matters concerning staff, students, and the public.
Notes:
· Students who are serving an out-of-school suspension are not permitted to attend any school sponsored extracurricular activity. Students who have been placed in an alternative setting may attend school-sponsored extracurricular activities.
· Students attending alternative school will be able to participate in prom and graduation ceremonies with their class and will abide by the same policies of the regular school setting.

LUNCH PERIOD for Developmental Kindergarten is from 11:00 A.M. – 11:30 A.M.; grades Kindergarten-2 is from 11:10 A.M. – 11:30 A.M.; grades 3-5 is from 11:30 A.M – 12:00 P.M.
SCHOOL ARRIVAL AND DAY’S END
ARRIVAL: Students may arrive no earlier than 8:00 A.M. and will report directly to the cafeteria and remain there until 8:05 when the playground teacher will take them to the designated area.
Help us to inform your child about what to do in the event you are late to pick them up. For safety, if you are late, we ask that the students return immediately to the office and wait there for your arrival.
Student safety is our first concern. We insist that students stay at the sidewalk or use the crosswalk. Do not ask students to walk between cars and load in the middle of the street. Please wait for buses to exit before leaving the parking lot. Please pull cars up as far as possible to load as many students as possible.
Please do not block the bus-loading zone on the West Side of the school.
Students should enter the building at the main West door and go directly to the cafeteria or playground. In inclement weather or temperature below 32 degrees go to the commons area.
RELEASE OF A STUDENT DURING THE SCHOOL DAY
All students leaving school early must be signed out through the office. If your child will be picked up by someone other than the regular person or parent we must have a note or call. The same if they are going home by a different mode than that established at the beginning of the year.
LEAVING AND RETURNING TO SCHOOL
The school has a closed campus policy. Once on the school campus any student leaving the school campus must be cleared through the office before leaving. Violation of this rule will result in 3 swats or 3 days suspension. NO EXCEPTIONS. When returning to school, check in at the office.
BICYCLES
Bicycles must be parked in the rack at the South end of the building and must not be ridden while on the school grounds.
STUDENTS WHO RIDE THE BUSES
Your bus driver is an important person in your school life. Do what he or she tells you. Your life may depend on it. Any bus student who continues to annoy others or break regulations will be referred to the school principal.
Be at the appointed bus stop on time. Remember you are only one. If you know you will not be riding the bus any day notify your driver so he or she won’t make an unnecessary trip or stop for you. The buses will not wait for you after school. It is your fault if you miss your bus.
Use of tobacco in any form, using profane language, and horseplay of any kind will not be tolerated on the bus at any time.
BUS BEHAVIOR
All students are under the supervision of the bus driver while on the bus. The principal or designated representative for the following behaviors may remove a student from riding the bus:
1. Talking to bus driver while bus is in motion
2. Leaving seat while bus is in motion
3. Reserving seats for other students
4. Using tobacco on bus
5. Excessive littering
6. Offensive/vulgar language
7. Disrespect to bus driver
8. Throwing object in or off the bus
9. Fighting
10. Spitting in the bus
11. Loud talking or unnecessary confusion
12. Destruction of school property
13. Putting any part of the body outside the bus
14. Unlocking emergency door except at direction of the bus driver
15. Indecent behavior
STATE SCHOOL ATTENDANCE LAW
Section 10-105. A.) It shall be unlawful for a parent, guardian, custodian or other person having control of a child who is over the age of seven (7) years and under the age of eighteen (18) years, and who has not finished four (4) years of high school work, to neglect or refuse to cause or compel such child to attend and comply with the rules of some public, private or other school, unless other means of education are provided for the full term the schools of the district are in session; and it shall be unlawful for any child who is over the age of sixteen (16) years and under the age of eighteen (18), and who has not finished four (4) years of high school work, to neglect or refuse to attend and comply with the rules of some public, private or other school, or receive and education by other means for the full term the schools of the district are in session.
The South Coffeyville Board of Education believes that in order for students to realize their fullest potential from educational efforts, they should attend all classes if possible. Realizing that some absences may be beyond a student’s control, the board has adopted a policy requiring students to be in attendance a minimum of 90% each semester to receive credit for any course in which the student is enrolled. Exceptions to this requirement will be considered by the board on an individual, case by case basis.
NOTIFICATION OF ATTENDANCE BY PARENT
Parents/Guardians of child/children absent from South Coffeyville School are required to notify the school before 9:00 A.M. the day of the absence. Any parent/guardian with a child absent from South Coffeyville School without proper notification to the school will be called by the school between 9 A.M. and 10 A.M. The school will attempt to call only two telephone numbers provided by the parents. It will be the parents’ responsibility to provide the school with the phone number(s) at enrollment time. If no phone number is provided or if a phone number is changed during the year and the school is not notified of the change, the parent is thereby releasing the school officials from this notification responsibility. If the two telephone numbers have been called, without answer, no further attempt will be made to reach the parents of the absent child/children. If the child answers, the school official will ask for the parent. If the parent is not available, it will be so noted but no further call will be made. No attempt will be made to contact parents/guardians who have made prior notification to the school that their child/children will be absent from the school. Any child who was absent from the school, without notifying the school, must bring a note signed by the parent/guardian upon their return to school. The note should confirm the date(s) of the absence(s) and the reason for the absence.
