7B Accelerated Science

Course Syllabus and Welcome!

Teacher: Ms.DoughertyE-mail:

Welcome to 7th grade accelerated science! This year you will be learning all about life science which is the study of life and the world around us. We will study cells, genetics, DNA, the 6 Kingdoms of life, the environment and ecology. We will use the steps of the scientific method extensively along with other skills to solve problems and answer questions about the world around us.

In accelerated science, we will explore each of these topics at more depth and with a different lens. Students will use multiple sources to apply scientific information to real world situations and problems. In addition, students will be challenged throughout the course as they participate in various reading, writing and seminar activities.

This year we are beginning a new science curriculum called Amplify Science. Amplify Science empowers students to make the leap from “learning about” to “figuring out” the natural and designed worlds, as they apply scientific practices to solve real-world problems. They conduct investigations, create and critique models, and gather evidence to support claims, just as scientists do.

Within the Amplify program, students will be asked to complete various writing assignments, read project briefs, and apply what they have learned to solve a real-life scientific problem. Students will be using in-class iPads to engage with the curriculum.

In addition to Amplify, students will complete labs and be required to write lab reports. Students will also be required to complete one independent project per marking period. In addition, students will be reading selected passages from The Omnivore’s Dilemma as it applies to our curriculum.

Homework will not be assigned daily; however, when homework is assigned, it will be posted in Schoology. Students will be responsible for writing the homework in their assignment book and/or checking Schoology daily. Homework and projects not turned in by the due date will receive a deduction in points.

If you ever find yourself needing extra help or have any questions, I am available during Advisory and SOS. Please also do not hesitate to e-mail me.

Remember while in class, it is expected that you exhibit certain “student skills.” These skills include being on time, coming to class prepared, being respectful, keeping the classroom neat and tidy and participating at the appropriate times.

In this science class, you will be required to bring in a few extra materials:

  • 2” 3-ring binder (for science only)
  • Approximately 7 pocket folders in different colors (we will give you one week’s notice of needing to bring in each folder, or you can bring in all of them now)
  • Ear buds or headphones to listen to in-class videos
  • Pencils
  • Access to Google Chrome or Safari at home

If any of these materials are unavailable to you, please let me know!

I’m looking forward to the great year ahead! Please review this information with your parent(s)/guardian(s) and sign below.
