•  Data Centre as a Service (DCaaS)

Slide 3: Data Centre Strategy

•  Coordinated procurement for facilities and services

•  Standardised data centre infrastructure

•  Trigger points

•  Mandatory for all FMA agencies

•  Year 1 – 3 funded from ICT BAU

•  From Year 4 charge back to agencies

Slide 4: Strategy Drivers

•  Electricity becomes a key cost driver

•  Limited market supply sufficient for immediate needs

•  New data centres waiting on committed lessees

•  Building a government data centre not timely

•  Cost avoidance through agency data centre investments

•  There is scope for collective action

Slide 5: Data Centre Strategy Program 2010 – 2025

Image: cables

First five years…

•  Aggregate whole of government demand

•  Establish data centre facilities and services panels

•  Assist the first agencies to move

•  Define standards to ensure maximum efficiencies

•  Work with smaller agencies to consolidate requirements

Second five years…

•  Further cost avoidance through shared technology solutions

Last five years…

•  New opportunities from changes in technology & processes

Slide 6: Benefits realisation

Sources of avoided costs

•  Increased efficiency in the use of electricity

•  Reduced data centre floor space

•  Increased efficiency of data centre ICT assets

•  Improved matching of ICT facilities to needs

•  Standardised ICT Infrastructure Architecture

•  Reduced agency procurement costs

Slide 9: Use of the Panels

Data Centre Facilities and Data Centre Migration Services Panels

•  Mandatory for use by FMA agencies

•  Opt-in use by

•  CAC agencies

•  Other Commonwealth agencies; and

•  State and Territory agencies

Slide 10: Use of the Panels – placing orders

Finance has entered into Head Agreements with the facility providers

•  Finance may place orders with providers on behalf of agencies

•  Agencies may place orders directly with providers (subject to meeting minimum requirements)

•  Agencies may place orders directly with providers for other agencies

Slide 11: Getting Started

Trigger Point identified, for example

•  Lease expiry

•  Outsourced contract expiry

•  Major asset replacement

•  Building move

•  End of data centre life

•  Increase in data centre capacity required

Slide 12: Defining requirements

Contact AGIMO Data Centres Team

Initial Requirements definition

•  Timelines

•  Space required (in square metres)

•  Power required (kW per rack)

•  Location preference

•  Dependencies

•  Will Migration Services be required

Slide 13: Data Centre Migration Services Panel

The Data Centre Migration Services Panel is used in conjunction with the Data Centre Facilities Panel to assist an agency’s move into a new facility

This Panel can also be used for

•  Improved utilisation of capacity within a data centre

•  Relocation of ICT infrastructure between data centres

•  Other modifications to data centres that are consistent with the strategy
