I joined Parenting in Fall of 2010 to help a new editorial director re-launch the magazine. My responsibilities included editorial planning, long features, the front-of-book “Offspring” section on children’s news (health information, medical studies, educational advice and new products) and regular contributions to the Parenting website. I was also involved in planning and covering Parenting’s special events such as the Mom Congress meeting in Washington, D.C.

2004-2010 Editorial Director, Conceive Magazine

Conceive, in all its media outlets, was designed to inform and empower women hoping to start or expand a family, whether by natural conception, fertility treatments, or adoption. As editorial director and brand manager, I was responsible for all Conceive content, which included the quarterly magazine, website, weekly e-newsletter, online radio show, and series of books (The Fertility Journal, Fertility Facts, and Cooking to Conceive, all published by Chronicle Books.) I managed an editorial staff, maintained the budget, and coordinated closely with ad sales, marketing, public relations and distribution departments. During my tenure Conceive was named one of the 50 Best Magazines in the country by the Chicago Tribune and won a Gold Folio award for best consumer lifestyle magazine.

BOOKS

20 Over 40 (University Press of Mississippi, 2006). This fiction anthology, co-edited with David Galef, contains 20 short stories written by writers over age 40; the stories are linked by a focus on midlife themes.

Outrageous Practices: The Alarming Truth About How Medicine Mistreats Women (Hardcover, Fawcett Columbine, 1994; paperback, Rutgers University Press, 1997). The book, co-authored with Leslie Laurence, covers gender bias in medical care--from medical education to research labs to clinical care.

The Healthy Traveler (Pocket Books, 1987). Tips on staying healthy--including advice on jet lag, motion sickness, and immunization--for vacationers and business travelers.
