Commercial Operations and Planning (CO&P) is responsible for a range of operational, commercial, strategic and financial activities in support the electricity generation fleet of Southern Company and its Operating Companies. We are grounded in the fundamentals, connected to employees and customers and innovating to face the future.

We are recruiting entry level engineers and/or engineering analysts to join our team in Birmingham, Alabama.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

·  Bachelor’s degree in indicated majors from an ABET accredited college or university

·  Minimum GPA of 3.0 preferred

·  US Citizen or Permanent Resident – sponsorships not available

·  May occasionally require some extended work hours

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

·  Ability to work effectively with others in a fast paced, deadline oriented team environment

·  Strong problem solving, analytical and technical skills

·  Proven initiative and leadership abilities

·  Strong communication skills - written, oral, listening and presentation skills required

·  Excellent organizational skills with ability to balance multiple assignments and responsibilities

·  Proficiency with standard business software such as Excel, Word, Access and PowerPoint is required

·  The candidate must value teamwork and demonstrate the ability to work effectively in a team environment andacross multiple business functions.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES (Varies with position):

·  Conduct economic evaluations and profitability analysis for various generation resource options using spreadsheets, generation economic dispatch simulation software and financial models

·  Maintain and optimize analytical tools as needed to perform and/or improve work product and efficiency

·  Perform cost effectiveness studies, alternative technology benefit studies, and other cost reducing/risk mitigating strategies

·  Provide market, financial, and risk analyses for a variety of company initiatives including regulatory filings, contract implementations, and market intelligence.

·  Candidate must be able to work with limited supervision.

Commercial Operations & Planning Engineering/Analyst Jobs

·  Financial & Contract Services Engineers provide billing and analyses support for intercompany power pool transactions, wholesale power contracts and wholesale transmission services. Engineers also analyze financial results of system operations, provide analytical support of wholesale power contract energy margins/net income, trading activities, retail energy and fuel costs.

·  Fleet Operations Engineers support the real-time system operations of the Southern Company Trading Floor. Fleet Operations dispatches and optimizes the generation fleet and trades wholesale power to provide low cost, reliable power to our customers.

·  Fuel Engineers provide a reliable fuel supply for Southern Company plant operations by planning, procuring, transporting and managing the system fuel supply, delivering environmentally acceptable fuel, and minimizing total cost and volatility to customers.

·  Southern Wholesale Energy Engineers support wholesale power marketing and sales of surplus generating capacity in both short and long term markets.

·  System Planning Engineers support long term generation and environmental planning by utilizing computer modeling software to study the impact of load growth and to plan and procure (or develop) any needed long term generation additions.
