ADVANCED FITNESS

Course Description
Advanced Fitness is an intense and rigorous class designed for student-athletes and those who wish to improve their current fitness levels. Initial fitness tests will be administered to establish baseline data. Strengths and weaknesses will be identified, then a prescriptive program will be established using a variety of conditioning techniques. Students will chart incremental progress throughout the semester in an effort to work towards established goals. The conditioning will focus on strength gain of major muscle groups with weight training, and endurance through cardiovascular exercise. Students will learn the value of physical activity for health, wellness, as well as the improvement of performance in competitive sports. This course will not meet the physical education requirement for graduation.

Indicators
The student will be able to:
- Pretest in a variety of fitness areas that can impact performance and general wellness
- Cardiovascular Fitness test (Pacer Test)
- Flexibility (Sit and Reach)
- Body Composition
- Strength Test (weights, body weight tests)
- Reflect on test results
- Analyze test data to determine areas of strength and weaknesses
- Write goals to address areas of needs
- Structure a personal fitness plan and develop a charting process that can be utilized to reflect their individual incremental improvement over time
Correlated Assignments Tasks/Activities
- Use training specific skills for various lifts (i.e. reps, grips, range of motion, and weight selection) to establish baseline data.
- Utilize general weight lifting safety guidelines and procedures
Assessments
- The students will maintain an accurate progress chart.
- The students will demonstrate proper form and technique in all lifts and exercises.
- The students will establish their baseline data through maximum effort in all tests.
- The students will participate as directed in order to achieve/accomplish performance goals

The student will be able to:
- Identify personal behavior that supports or does not support a healthy lifestyle with incremental evaluations
- Utilize proper technique for warm-up and cool-down procedures.
- Differentiate the value of a variety of nutrients
- Balance muscular strength gain and endurance by focusing on major muscle groups (i.e. chest, back, shoulders, legs, arms, core)
- Lift weights using appropriate lift techniques
- Model appropriate exercises which enhances their cardiovascular fitness
- Select appropriate intensity to make progressive gains
Correlated Assignments Tasks/Activities
- Perform lifts with proper technique
- Demonstrate cardiovascular exercises
- Cooperatively work with classmates utilizing proper spotting techniques
- Utilize general weight lifting safety guidelines and procedures
Assessments
- The students will demonstrate overload through selection of weights and repetitions completed.
- The students will show mastery of the skills needed in cardiovascular exercise.
- The students will utilize a resting heart rate and exercise heart rate to identify their fitness progress.
- The students will identify the nutrient content of foods in relationship to athletic performance and general wellness.
- The students will demonstrate proper form and technique in all lifts and exercises.
- The students will provide evidence in charting that reflects muscular balance

- Connect the principle of reversibility due to inactivity and the aging process
- Recognize the necessity of a commitment to life-long fitness
- List and describe the benefits of strength training (i.e. performance, bone density, tendon and ligament thickness, decrease potential injury, body composition, and general wellness)
- Utilize proper technique for warm-up and cool-down procedures
- Differentiate the value of a variety of nutrients
- Balance muscular strength gain and endurance by focusing on major muscle groups (i.e. chest, back, shoulders, legs, arms, core)
- Lift weights using appropriate lift techniques
- Model appropriate exercises which enhances their cardiovascular fitness
- Select appropriate intensity to make progressive gains

- Survey a collection of individuals regarding their weight training and physical activity.
- Develop a lifelong fitness plan for current and future well-being.
- Perform lifts with proper technique.
