What’s My Style?

Content Standards:
AA.S.1Students will acquire attitudes, knowledge, and skills that contribute to effective learning in school and across thelifespan.
Indicators (Students will…):
AA.A.10.1.06Apply knowledge of learning styles to positively influence school performance.
GOAL: Students will explore learning styles and study techniques and choose strategies to improve individual learning.Activity Statements:
Students will identify their individual learning style - visual, auditory, tactile, or combination. By using the results of a self-assessment, they will develop a plan to include strategies to improve their ability to learn.
Materials:
Handout 1 Learning Style Inventory

Procedures:
1.Distribute Handout 1Learning Styles Inventory and ask each student to complete independently.
2. Ask students to score their inventory.
3. Discuss the different learning styles.
4. Separate students into groups based on the results of their self-assessment.
5.Distribute Handout 2 Instructional Tools for Different Learning Modalities. Ask students to discuss the instructional tools and suggestions for their learning style. Each group will then report out strategies that are useful for their particular learning modality.
6. Distribute Handout 3 Multiple Intelligence Survey and ask each student to complete and score the survey independently.
7. Once again, ask students to form groups based on the results of their survey.
8. Distribute Handout 4 Multiple Intelligences and ask students to discuss learning strategies that complement their particular intelligence.
9. Whole class discussion (see suggestions below).
10. Ask students to name their specific learning modality and intelligence style. Then ask students to identify a learning strategy they can use to enhance their modality and intelligence.
Discussion:
What is your dominate learning style?
Do you agree with this assessment? Why or why not?
What is your predominant intelligence?
Did your scores surprise you? How?
What strategies do you think will work best for you?

Extension Activities:
On your own, go to one or more of the above websites, complete the assessments; continue to learn about yourself and try new techniques that fit your learning style.
Lesson Evaluation:
Students will discuss the results of their surveys with parents and teachers. Students will explain appropriate learning strategies for their specific learning modality and intelligence. Those who provide academic support with provide assistance with homework based on the student’s style. Students will explain why they perform better on tasks in which they can apply their dominant learning style.
